His worst movie?

What do you all think it is?

reply

Historical? That's funny.

reply

Ready Player One

No contest: Hook

Other than that he's got a very high success rate.

reply

1941 with honorable mention to Hook.

Hook was great.

reply

I liked 1941 (original cut), Always, and The Terminal.

Hook was awful.

The Spielberg produced and story written, but Donner directed, The Goonies was not good.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was mediocre, as was Twilight Zone: The Movie.

reply

You're right The Goonies was not good. It was fantastic. How can you not love The Goonies? I'm guessing you weren't a child of the 80's?

reply

I grew up in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I dislike The Goonies when seeing it at the theater, and I have grown to dislike it more as time passes. It has some elements that could have made it a much better film than it was, but overall, it was a stinker.

reply

Temple of Doom mediocre? It's the best adventure film of all time!

Although it has some flaws, Hook was great. The music, the performances and the magical quality of the film.

So is the Terminal. Although maybe not as good as Hook it was pretty good. It's strange to me how someone can dislike this film, but everything is not for everyone.

reply

Temple of Doom was a caricature of Raiders of the Lost Arc.

reply

If you think that then you must have been pretty hazy while watching it. How it is possible to dislike a film of this quality is beyond me.

Not to be rude, but you must lack the ability to know and feel quality when you see it. Just the SHOTS alone is great. The compositions. Then add to that the story, the acting, the action, the humor, the drama, the sweetness, the charm, the 1984 classic feel.

A caricature? Where?

reply

I disagree. Please don't get personal.

I did not enjoy Temple of Doom. If you enjoyed it, that's cool.

reply

Don't get personal? Lol.

I was trying to get you into a conversation about the film. Did you not notice that this is a discussion board? You need to relax a little.

reply

Not to be rude, but you must lack the ability to know and feel quality when you see it.

Attacking one's ability to recognize quality is personal. Tell us why you like the film instead of taking shots.

reply

I wrote: "not to be rude" beforehand as a way of de-neutralizing my next statement which was a semi-tough observation. I really can't comprehend how anyone can not enjoy Temple of Doom.

Then I went ahead and told you exactly what I like about the film: "Just the SHOTS alone is great. The compositions. Then add to that the story, the acting, the action, the humor, the drama, the sweetness, the charm, the 1984 classic feel."

Then I asked: "A caricature? Where?"

You still haven't answered. You got hung up on my semi-tough observation, which really wasn't meant as rude.

reply

A.I. hands down.

1941 may have been one of his biggest flops financially, but it has some wildly inventive sight gags and creative sequences. I'm proud to have it in my Blu Ray collection and watch it every Christmas. It was a collaborative exercise combining Spielberg's strongly visual style and showmanship with the irreverent humor of Bob Gale and Bob Zemeckis and the over the top machismo bordering on self-parody of John Milius. There's definitely none of the schmaltz you find when Spielberg is left to his own devices as in the execrable Always or the almost unwatchable Hook..

I wouldn't say that's the only good thing that came out of 1941, but Spielberg says in the early 90's Laserdisc doc The Making of 1941 (appended to all current American Blu Rays of the film) that he prefers the 1941 March to John Williams' far more famous Indiana Jones March.
