A bona-fide sociopath

I have never liked Kevin Spacey as an actor. The reason why is that he always came across as creepy to me, like an android trying very hard to convince you that it's really human but missing those subtle facial ticks and intonations that a real person would have. Picture Data from Star Trek, except with none of the charisma of a Brent Spiner coming through the character. Just a void.

Years later, I couldn't figure out how an actor so completely devoid of humanity and whose mannerisms were so artificial could be seen as "acclaimed." Then I figured out watching American Beauty that what he does is imitate other actors. By imitate, I don't mean "channel" (like how Bette Davis channeled Tallulah Bankhead in All About Eve or Johnny Depp channeled Michael Jackson for Willy Wonka). I mean he just plays a character the way another actor would've played him. If you don't recognize who he's mimicking you think the brilliance is coming from him but if you do, it's obvious what he's doing.

In American Beauty, he's not acting as Lester Burnham but playing the character as a Jack Lemmon impersonator. Before everyone calls me crazy, just know that he's an accomplished mimic and in a past life (like during the Ed Sullivan era) would've been on the same level as a Rich Little or Frank Gorshin. (So, he earns my compliments in that regard. He is a talented impersonator.)

The point is that regardless of whether or not the allegations are true, I believe he's a sociopath in real life, completely lacking in sympathy or empathy for other people. It's why his performance left such a strong impression in people's minds in Se7en. He wasn't acting. He was basically playing himself.

Who is he imitating in The Negotiator?

reply

I don't know. I've never seen The Negotiator. But what is your point, though? Most actors base their performers on other actors or even a person that they know. The difference is that they're able to bring a little of themselves to their roles (and some humanity) so that you don't feel as if they're merely being robots mimicking someone. This humanity is why you feel Captain Jack Sparrow is a real character (as opposed to being a soulless rote imitation of Keith Richards).

My point is that he seemed very real and authentic in The Negotiator, and wasn’t ‘imitating other actors’ as you claimed he does.

reply

A lot of people felt the same way about his performances in Se7en, the Usual Suspects, and American Beauty (that he was being real). But if I felt he was being artificial in those critically acclaimed movies, why would I feel differently about The Negotiator? I don't think I'd feel any differently, to be quite honest.

reply

Well watch it and then explain which other actor you imagine he’s imitating.

I’m not even clear which other actors he’s supposedly imitating in Se7ev, The Usual Suspects and American Beauty 🤷🏻‍♂️

He's amazing in The Negotiator. One of the best films.

I think it is very interesting you mentioned Jack Lemmon because Spacey had a friendship with Lennon. He actually won his Broadway breakthrough role in “Long Days Journey into Night” in the 1980’s where Lemmon was playing the lead role. He walked into the audition and did a spot-on imitation of Jack Lemmon, charming every one.

So I do think you nailed it here.

Thank you. One of the reasons why I dislike American Beauty so much is that if you're familiar with Jack Lemmon's work, Spacey doesn't come across as channeling Lemmon but as doing a creepy, soulless imitation of him that missed the very mark of why people loved him. By that I mean, it wasn't the head turns, the delivery and the facial tics that defined Lemmon. It was his humanity that people loved the most. But Spacey--perhaps lacking humanity himself--missed this very signature characteristic by a mile in American Beauty.

To give everyone some contrast, go watch some clips of a soap opera actor named Christian LeBlanc. He is clearly an admirer of Jack Lemmon. However, with him, you don't feel like he's doing a flat imitation. You feel like he's a human being doing a loving homage to Lemmon precisely because he admired him for his humanity and everyman persona (not because of the signature facial tics, mannerisms, etc.)

I have to say that I always DID like Kevin Spacey. But I had a very interesting experience when I went to see him when he was playing Richard III about 10 years ago in a Theatre (It was the Brooklyn Academy of Music). I thought he was very good and at the curtain call, everyone was clapping wildly, cheering. At the back of the theatre, a very clear voice shouted at him when he took his bow——- “YOU SUCK!!!. “

It was a jarring moment. But I realize this was part of the back story that has been following him for years. I can’t even watch his films on TV now— just makes me too uncomfortable.

It's a bad movie if it doesn't capture the essence of who Jack Lemmon was, and that's someone who represented the everyman and a humanity you could relate to. Spacey plays Lemmon as if he were a soulless sociopath.

LOL. I gotta say this comes off as very trial lawyer-like. As if you were a D.A. making an opening statement against Kevin as he stands trial for mutilating a girl scout troop with a power saw.

Thanks...I think?

You're welcome.

I can see Laura Linney making your statement in a court room

It's funny how when some public figure gets cancelled, the "I never liked him" statements start rolling in.

Every time I see someone use terms like "woke", "canceled", and "cancel culture," I just know they're an idiot who spends all their time on social media. It's so sad when grown adults stop forgetting how to use vocabulary or thinking above the level of a 4chan troll.
