Can he make a comeback?

I know this sounds silly, but hear me out.

If all charges against him are dropped, both in America and in the UK, and if Kevin goes on TV and apologizes profusely. Says that he did things he regret, but he is not an evil person and that he apologizes from the bottom of his heart, crying and begs for forgiveness - the whole thing. And he appears REALLY remorseful. After all that...

Can he make a comeback?

reply

If he's a leftie, he'll not only be forgiven, he'll be heralded as a brave hero and will probably get better roles.

reply

I think only in independent movies. No big Hollywood producer is going to want to have to answer the questions of his casting because there will always be people thinking that he's guilty. Independent films would take an A list actor like him to sell their movie.

reply

That is not necessarily a bad thing. Most indi movies can easily keep with Hollywood flicks. I mean look at "Three Billboards Outside Ebbin Missouri". That move was brilliant and there plenty more examples where indi movies made a difference.

reply

yes if polanski did 👍

reply

Polanski is living in France so he can't be prosecuted, he fled the U.S. so have he wouldn't be arrested.

reply

Yes.

I don't think he can ever get back to the status he had five years ago. He was a true icon.

We aren't talking about what's true or not, but peoples' impressions. And, IMO those are altered forever due to this stuff.

Not saying he won't work. He will. But not as the icon he once was.

reply

Once an icon always an icon. He has two Academy Awards and plenty of other rewards under his belt. He will come back and knowing him it will be with a bang. He still is one of the best actors on earth right now and if he finds the right project and makes the best of it he will be back in Hollywood in no time.
You don't need to like an actor to appreciate his movies. Spacey is a brilliant actor and whether I like him or not doesn't affect the way I see his movies. If a movie is good, it's good, if it's bad, it's bad but that has nothing to do with who's in it.

reply

I appreciate your personal take on it, and I get it. But my point wasn't about one person's opinion or tastes but rather whether or not his former status will return. I say it won't. Totally disagree with your first sentence. Since this is what they call a subjective type topic, I'd conjecture that your own feelings about Spacey influenced your answer.

I do not remember a case of someone being tainted this badly returning to their prior glory. Mel Gibson is rarely ever mentioned anymore. There are other examples.

If you try to see it from the (evidential) perspective others hold of him, you'll see more of my point.

I guess if allthis is forgotten five years from now, we'll know LTUM was wrong. But I don't think I am.

(also, from reading your reply, I am not sure you read my whole post)

reply

You're probably right. My own feelings for Spacey are getting in the way of a subjective view. I have been a fan of his work as long as I can remember and when I heard the allegations I couldn't believe it. Nevertheless, I hope there are enough people out there who still want to see him on the screen and will want to work with him.
Most likely people won't forget about the allegations and they will always be in his way.

All that said I still think he will also be remembered for his movies even if it might be with a bitter taste now. He won two Oscars and for years has been one of the best and most influential actors working. He is a part of Hollywood history and he crucially shaped the industry. Just because he is not held in good grace doesn't mean he isn't still an icon.

reply

true, true, very well said. i think his past work will always be respected.

and don't get me wrong, i would love to see everything settle down and him return to the way it was. i just don't believe people will let that happen. anger and bitterness rules peoples' hearts these days. our culture is not like it once was.

i will be pulling for him. i am a huge fan too.

reply

I don't think he is going to apologize for anything but nevertheless, I think and hope with all my heart that he makes a comeback. It won't be soon but I am sure in two or three years we will see him in another movie or TV show.
I don't think what he allegedly did was right but he is one of the best actors on earth right now and if he doesn't go nuts and starts drinking or taking drugs and has scandal after scandal I am sure he can and will come back from this.
I wish him all the best and hope to see him acting again soon.

reply

>>I don't think he is going to apologize for anything but nevertheless

Really? I see no other way out. He will never be forgiven if he doesn't show regret. I'm not talking about a case by case apology, but a general one. I really see no other way out for him if he wants to act again.

reply

He did say he regretted what he might have done but after the Frank Underwood video, he posted on YouTube and the poet reading in the museum it seems he is confident enough that he will be coming back soon and that behavior doesn't really indicate an apology to come soon.

Did Louis C. K. apologize for what he was accused of??? I don't think so and he is working again and selling out theatres. Not as big as before of course but still people want to still see him.
It's gonna be the same for Spacey. He already said it was wrong he has not been convicted of anything, therefore, nothing to apologize for.
He is going to make a strong comeback in the next couple of years and I am sure by then enough people will go to see it to know that whatever happened has nothing to do with his profession.

reply

>>Did Louis C. K. apologize for what he was accused of???

Well, he's not a two-time Oscar winner. Kevin is in another league and the allegations against him is much more severe.

The video is a good point, and so is the fact that there is an ongoing investigation and he's not convicted of anything as of yet. I am talking about a broad apology where he truly apologies to anyone he might have hurt. Show profound regret, and really mean it. There is a reason the words: "I'm sorry" carries a healing effect. It could make a difference in this situation.

Seeing him do a comeback without any of that would be the same as OJ Simpson making a comeback. The gravity of the crime is not similar, but the point is that you can't brush this thing under the carpet.

reply

He's a lefty. He'll be back. They forgive their own, no matter what.
