Weird way of saying..

..words that start with a w?

where
whale

Anyone else notice?

I noticed that in House of Cards. I think it might be a Southern accent thing though. I remember hearing the same thing in Breaking Bad, certain characters would pronounce Walter White's name with the same weird "w" should.

From Memphis TN and now live in Mississippi (bless my heart) and some southerns pronounce words that way. He has a fine ear for dialect. Almost without fault on here and Midnight in the Garden.

I assumed that was an act, portraying Frank's southern accent.

Yes, it's just for the character.

He was taught his American Accent by Ray Winstone after Kevin Spacey saw him in 'Cold Mountain' and in 'Edge of Darkness '.

All credit goes to Mr Winstone.

Some accents still differentiate between the pronunciation of wine and whine.

@Gemma_Philips

I'm confused by your statement.

Kevin Spacey is American, so no one taught him an American accent. He's not from the American South, so he doesn't have a natural Southern accent, but he has done a Southern accent before in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. He lived in Georgia for a time to pick that up.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil came out in 1997, Cold Mountain came out in 2003, and Edge of Darkness came out in 2010, so I don't think Ray Winstone can be given credit for Kevin's ability to do a Southern accent because of the fact he had a very good one in a film he made 6 years before your earliest Winstone reference.

With that being said, am I misunderstanding you? Not trying to pick a fight just genuinely wondering where you got your information.
