Martin Scorsese is a fan of the Hammer Horror Movies.

Is it hypocritical to bash people for liking escapist fiction while being a fan of escapist fiction. Hmm.

Hammer and Marvel etc aren’t close to the same thing. There’s plenty of universally beloved escapist fiction. Recent EF is corporate garbage

Because corporations have only been interested in making money in only the last ten years, got it. There was probably tons of people in the 50's bitching about all the endless Space, Monsters and Horror movies being made. Just like there were people bitching in the 80's about how there too many movies that featured sweaty guys blowing shit up. Im not going say the MCU movies are masterpiece. But neither were the Hammer Horror movies. There some good ones and there some not so good ones. But this whole song and dance goes back forever. Sooner or Later Superhero will fall out of favor with the Public and something else will become popular. And then there be another group of people bitching about how its all corporate garbage.

Lol “got it”. You’re intentionally oversimplifying it. Corporate control hasn’t always been the same. Hammer movies relied on low budget moviemaking so even a modest box office performance would yield a profit. Theres always been the bottom line but at least there was some awareness of trying to do something different. The stakes are much different now. Huge budgets increase likelihood of outside interference and mediocre product. Now they’re not even trying to make something new or interesting, even with huge budgets and access to any talent. They’re just making movies with lots of pretty colors and explosions.
Also, the people who didn’t like old monster movies etc still had other options at movie theaters. Now if you don’t like X Avengers Men United Revenge there’s not many options.

So in other words. Your problem isnt the Marvel Movies. Its that there not as much competition in the movie biz as there use to be. Maybe should call the FCC and tell them not to let Disney Buy everything in sight.

It's fine because the Hammer movies were in the horror genre and the genre has a hard ceiling. Cinema isn't in danger of getting dominated by horror, it's ever present but will never be the dominant number one genre at the box office.

That's where the sour grapes and whining comes from, jealousy and annoyance at the major success of the comic book movies. If the Marvel movies were little flicks that only grossed $50-100 mill a pop then you wouldn't have people like Scorsese bitching and moaning.

It was fine for Hammer to pump out tens of vampire movies that are all similar to one another but it's a disgrace that a handful of superhero movies get released every year.

He didn't bash people for liking escapist fiction. He was bashing Super Hero movies specifically.
