shareThat was actually a smart thing to do. Pretty Woman is a terrible movie. But I do think Molly would've been much better than Julia Roberts.
shareif true, it was obviously a horrible move, as pretty woman made roberts, an 80s brat pack actress like ringwald, a humongous star
shareRoberts wasn't a brat-pasck actress. And even though some of you feel that Pretty Woman was a bad movie you can't deny that Molly Ringwald probably would have been a bigger star than she is now.
"... death is but the next great adventure." Rest in Peace - Heath Ledger.

Sure we can deny it. I don't think Pretty Woman would have worked with Molly Ringwald as Vivien any more than I think Raiders of the Lost Ark would have worked with Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones (that's the person Spielberg originally wanted to cast). It wouldn't have been the same movie. Can you imagine Bette Davis as Scarlet O'Hara? She was considered for the role. So, yeah, I don't think there are any guarantees that if Molly Ringwald had done Pretty Woman that she would have known Julia Roberts's success.

Maybe...maybe not. The movie might not have worked with Molly Ringwald in the role of Vivien. She might not have been able to play it, might not have had chemistry with Richard Gere -- who knows? Maybe Pretty Woman needed a relative unknown like Julia Roberts to work. I have also heard that Drew Barrymore (whom I adore) was offered the part.
Didn't Molly also trun down Demi Moore's role in Ghost?? I think I read that somethere too!

Jennifer Jason Leigh also turned it down. From what she said, it was a much different script at that time, a darker story. Not the crowd pleaser that Gary Marshall turned it into with Julia Roberts.
Molly Ringwald fell in love and moved to France. If she hadn't done that, I think she would have continued to be a big star, with or without Pretty Woman.
