I'd like to see him a a major villain

Maybe as a Batman villain. Someone formidable. I bet he'd be good. Kinda think he woulda been better than Cruise in the bad guy tmrole for "Collateral "

like this?

I don't think The Watcher was as bad as people say. Not his greatest work but he really didn't want to do it.

reply

Not like that. That was pretty unwatchable.

He did that in Man of Tai Chi.

It's the question that drives us. I know the answer is 42.

He was a villain in The Watcher (2000) and his performance along with the film were god awful.

I don't think he would have topped Cruise in Collateral. He played that role really well.

reply

The Watcher's a bad example cause well, it was an awful movie and he was effectively blackmailed into the role, so he definitely didn't care too much about his performance there.

I don't necessarily agree with OP about the Collateral role, but I think Reeves would play effective villains. I think his best acting performances have come from his roles where his character is inherently unlikable, though his only true villain roles I can think of would be The Watcher and Man of Tai Chi. And though the latter wasn't a good movie either, I thought his role was convincing.

reply

Well I don't know all the back story surrounding the production of The Watcher, I just know that his performance was terrible. From what I remember he was doing someone a favor by staring in it and then something happened and he wouldn't promote the film afterwards.

I'm not trying to say Reeves couldn't play a villain, I'm sure there are plenty of roles he could fill there if he chose to. But, it's just hard for me to see anyone else up Cruise in that specific film because Cruise played it extremely well.

reply

Yeah, for sure, Collateral is one of my favorite movies, and I do think Cruise lends a specific edge that it's hard for me to picture what Reeves can do had he the role.

Re: the watcher, a strange story, def recommend googling it. He only came out with the truth about it a few years ago. Basically someone forged his signature on a contract or so something lol

reply

As I heard it, someone forged his name and sent the contract in. Rather than risk being sued, or having to sue to get out of it, he just did the movie. But he refused to participate in promoting it.

I don't know if he'd be good, honestly. I really like him as an actor, contrary to many here. But maybe because of all the "hero" roles he got over his career and his real life personality, I don't see him as a credible villain. Maybe if he had super versatile actor skills... but I recognize he's very good only in a specific type of roles. And villain is not one of them, I think.

I'm not against seeing him star as another major villain though. Would be interesting as I wish he would prove me wrong !

reply

I guess it depends on the type of villain, but he was not a good person in The Gift (2000).

reply

He wasn't a good person in John Wick. Yeah, the story is designed to side with him, but at the end of the day, he's a professional murderer.
