His most breath-taking performance may have been in his worst film

Whenever I see SILENT TONGUE, I can't help but think of how good River could have been in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (most people don't know he was attached to the film as one of the possible leads, and was preferred casting by Anne Rice, but he was pushed down to the role of the interviewer by producer David Geffen before dying -- but I could totally see him as Louis.... but then I wasn't a fan of the Cruise/Pitt casting, especially Cruise).

Anyway, the irony about SILENT TONGUE was that while it may have done the best job of showing what kind of actor River Phoenix was becoming as an adult, the movie itself is an absolute mess.

Shame.

I think I read that they were considering him for the part of Lestat in Interview with the Vampire, but the director and producers wanted someone older, so the chose Cruise. Then River got the part of Daniel, which is a small part (after his death it went to Christian Slater of course, who was around the same age as River). I agree with you, because I think he was cast totally wrong as both Lestat and Daniel. He would have made the perfect Louis. That's the role he should have gotten, though sadly he would have never been in it anyway, seeing that he passed away about a month before the filming began.
