Straight out of high school, age 17, no acting experience. I've always thought they hired him because he looked so sweet and wholesome, the opposite of what people imagined a gay teen to look like to make a statement because it's exactly what most gay teens do look like. Anyway, when the gig ended he was on his first flight ever, traveling to LA where he survived for the most part on TV episodes until he landed his first film role in White Squall directed by Ridley Scott, the year after he was a bumped up extra on Tony Scott's Crimson Tide.
It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it.
RIP Roger Ebert
He was great in that role too.
