Anyway, yeah it was obviously a dumb lie. Things don't work like that in the real world. The second he found out the truth he would've called his agent and thrown a huge tantrum until he was released from his obligation
He just wanted to be Garfield, but the movie sucked so he made up that cheap lie to excuse it
