Demi Moore and Meg Ryan's careers.

Demi used her sex appeal for stardom (boobs and toned body)
Meg Ryan's was her girl next door image and girlish looks.

to her credit Meg DID try and break free from that image ( In The Cut)
but the public wasn't having any of it. they would not allow Meg to "grow up"
into mature roles, some can, some can't.

Demi as much as I like her, refuses to be an older woman and be seen in such a way . Demi's insecurity of growling older gets the better of her every time!
opinions vary on her acting ability. I think she can act pretty good if she plays her own range of age and such. how much of her "trouble" is of her own making?
hanging with guys and gals decades younger than her and partying like a girl in her 20's!!

Maybe a break from the limelight would do her good and she can figure put what she wants or can do next and make a comeback accordingly at a later time.

Meg Ryan hasn't acted in a film since 2009, so she may have gave it up.
since the public didn't take to her "grown up roles" before you all say it's due to her plastic surgery (and some is no doubt) remember when she did TRY and move on with "In the cut".
either way BOTH women have had a good run in the industry and are wealthy.
Meg did seem to move on and has stayed out of the limelight for the most part now.

Maybe Demi should give it a whirl.

The other factor is how difficult these women are on the set. I have heard negative things about Ryan.

So, what the hell happened? How did the queen of romantic comedies in the late 80′s and all through the 90′s wind up making direct-to-video schlock like 2008′s My Mom’s New Boyfriend?

There’s no doubt that the Proof of Life controversy had a lot to do with it. In spite of the fact that Ryan and Quaid’s marriage had all but ended by the time she hooked up with Crowe, she was branded with a scarlet letter that ruined her public image.

I don’t think such a scandal would be so devastating to another actress, but Ryan’s entire career was built on the idea that she was the wholesome girl-next-store. Once that was gone, audiences wanted nothing to do with her.

Although Ryan made several attempts to stretch beyond the romantic comedies that were her bread-and-butter, audiences never fully embraced Ryan as anything but a romantic interest. Whether or not it was an issue of range is debatable. Either way, she was unable to win over audiences in dramatic roles.

And then there’s the issue of age. Age is cruel to Hollywood starlets which is why there are so many more washed up actresses to choose from. Perhaps Ryan’s career would have dried up even without the Proof of Life controversy as audiences moved on to younger starlets like the current crop of rom com divas.

Finally, Meg Ryan has tried to fight off aging with some rather unfortunate plastic surgery. You have to think aging gracefully would have been better than this!

At least with ryan 'in the cut' was done in good taste as was her nudity but having said that the film was still awful as were many of her later choices. But with moore's career it was striptease that killed it dead, before that her roles were respectable and she was been considered for the Julia Roberts/Sandra bullock type roles. After striptease which was the height of bad taste, there was no way in hell people would ever respect moore again as an actress, she had gone from an A lister to porn star. To this day, I can't believe she accepted striptease,it was career suicide for 1 big payment. Don't get me wrong, I like moore and she is a good actress imho but it's pretty much common thought that her career would have fared much better had she stayed clear of striptease.

Striptease was nowhere near as tasteless as Showgirls - now that was the height of bad taste.

when I said porn star, I was exaggerating slightly but my point was that doing striptease made a lot of people lose respect for her and made her seem cheap, trashy and a sell out. Nudity in film can be done well when done tastefully but with striptease the title alone just stank of mediocrity and bad taste. To think the studio had her head hunted for great scripts like while you were sleeping and the English patient as well as been considered for forrest gump around the time as striptease goes to show you how good her career was before she sold out.

But all the posters on the IMDb boards were literate, lucid and great.

Right. And the check is in the mail.

To Santa Clause.
