Sharon Stone is another example of someone who was in several major movies but then her career fizzled, basically for the same reason. People didn't go to movies to see Sharon Stone. But she was lucky to be cast in movies that did really well due to story line and co-stars. Her acting was okay, but like Demi, people didn't really go to movies to see her specifically. Some actresses really "grab" the fans and keep them. These two didn't.

No, Sharon not "like Demi." Sharon was not even half as famous as Demi was. Demi starred in one of the biggest movies of all time - the 4th biggest box office hit of all time in its day.

Whoopie and Patrick Swayze were the top stars and carried that movie. Moore was a supporting character, as was Tony Goldwyn (who is doing very well in Scandal). Also the subject matter was very fascinating and likely drew people in, since it was around that time that people started talking about near death experiences and ghost encounters. Any actress could have played the girlfriend. It was Whoopie and Patrick's movie.

Demi Moore was the LEAD in Ghost. Whoopi was supporting, hence her SUPPORTING actress Oscar.

Demi Moore was a huge box-office draw in the early 90s- she had Ghost, A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal and Disclosure all hit $100 million plus. Never mind the male co-leads, she was the female lead and that counts. She fizzled after Striptease.
