Why did she drop off the A-list?

Throughout the '90s, Demi Moore was one of the most biggest movie stars in Hollywood. Not only that, but she was also one of the most bankable actresses earning up to $12 million a picture. Rumors of her divalike behavior on set, and the box office turkeys known as Striptease and G.I. Jane seem to have played a factor in her declining star power.

Scarlet Letter probably did her her. What was she thinking doing a costume drama?? Though I admit to loving it in a perverse way because it is so wrong on every level.

Didn't her character (Hester Prynne) ride off into the sunset with the preacher at the end of The Scarlet Letter? What were they thinking?

Seriously, [R268]. Demi Moore in a period film was such a terrible idea. She was way too modern, and not a good enough actress, to pull that off. I remember when the Scarlet Letter came out, it was ridiculed by everybody.

Julia Roberts also did a period film around this time called Mary Reilly and the same thing happened to her, she was far too modern to play period, and was widely ridiculed. Julia learned her lesson and never attempted a historical drama again.

Kim Basinger if you ask me, suffered from an almost similar fate as Demi Moore. They both pretty much hit their expatriation dates by their early 40s (although Kim got a brief reprieve via "LA Confidential"). Even without the age factor, the bad movies, their over all limited talents, and overexposure (like Kim with Alec Baldwin, Demi Moore was in her own high profile marriage with Bruce Willis) eventually took their toll. And like Demi, Kim was physically attractive but her personality was always coarse and off-putting. Kim Basinger just rubbed people the wrong way either through her aloofness, awkwardness, militant animal rights activism, her romance with somebody as boorish and brutish as Alec Baldwin. Both ladies also never really pretended to be humble and the public simply put, doesn’t like that.

Once they became famous they started demanding a lot of money and their movies flopped. And naturally, producers and studios got sick of her many demands. None of the movies that Kim did were seat-fillers besides "Batman" just like none the movies that Demi Moore did during her heyday were seat-fillers besides "Ghost" and "A Few Good Men" (and the credit to that went more towards Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson). In effect, all of their big hit films had co-stars who were as big or bigger than they were. Neither Kim or Demi ever really headlined a hit. In other words, whenever they were the main focus of the film, it was a disaster. In Kim's case "The Marrying Man", "Cool World", "Final Analysis", "The Real McCoy", "I Dreamed of Africa", and "Bless the Child" and in Demi's case, "The Scarlett Letter", "Striptease" among others. Like "I Dreamed of Africa" for Kim, "GI Jane" was presumably supposed to be Demi Moore's own "dramatic breakthrough". But when they weren't the giant hits people thought they should be, they seemed to really bring it all down for both ladies acting-wise. Ever notice that shortly after their divorces, both Kim and Demi lived in seclusion for at least a good decade?

The humblish part I cant completely agree with as theirs a huge list of successful snobs if you ask me. Like Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and so-on...

I liked cool world, and the Real McCoy were considered fan favorites.

I remember the Scarlett Letter was memorable and the book they make us read in high school so it must have some upside.

In all seriousness, she had two back to back bombs with Striptease in 1996 and GI Jane in 1997 which were starring vehicles for Demi. After that she took time away from Hollywood to let people forget or just stopped getting offers cause she moved up to Hailey, Idaho (that town that she and Bruce Willis bought) and raised her kids away from the Hollywood spotlight when they were younger. She didn't do another film for six years and tried her "comeback" with the Charlie's Angel's sequel in 2003. She still looked hot and years younger than her actual age, but she was still over the hill for Hollywood by that point.

Two words BRUCE WILLIS

She was never any kind of serious actor. A child would notice this. Give me a break.

I liked both. Not a huge fan of striptease but it was enjoyable. I prefer Showgirls. Who wouldnt enjoy watching Demi as a stripper? She has a beautiful body even though heavily enchanced. I always loved G.I. Jane and was very proud she did that film. She looked gorgeous in it as well.

Because she was never anything more than a flash in the pan that Hollywood was desperately trying to make the next
"it" girl.
