Why does Val look so old now!?

I know that he has been dealing with numerous health issues but ever since his cancer ordeal, he has virtually aged by 20 years. And this was just before, he had put on a gross amount of weight:

Because he's over 50 and hasn't taken care of himself?

reply

I wonder if Val has publicly said that his smoking habits was a major likely factor for his cancer cause:

Val Kilmer just strikes me as somebody who is in a tad bit of denial regarding his health.

reply

I read recently that one symptom of drug/alcohol abuse is accelerated aging, particularly of the face. It explains a lot regarding some actors aging horribly, while others take good care of themselves. Apparently controlled substances can be very hard on a person's looks if used long enough.

reply

Alcoholism

reply

Holy Shnikes! That photo. He looks like a woman who's had too much work done, Jesus.

reply

He's trying to survive the insidious throat cancer. A lot of people have it worse, at least he's walking around.

reply

And when you really think about it, Val's condition would've likely been much better had he gotten actual medical treatment earlier. But because Val is a Christian Scientist, he believed that the power of "prayer" instead of medicine would heal his condition.

reply

Yeah, we can't know for sure that early treatment would have saved his voice..how long did Val have symptoms before he finally went to the doctor?
However, we can be almost 100 positive that Val's lifestyle, which consisted of smoking, led to the condition he is in.

Val Kilmer says prayer treated throat cancer, not tracheotomy which has 'caused my suffering'

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/val-kilmer-prayer-treated-throat-cancer-not-tracheotomy-which-has-caused-my-suffering-185805816.html

Val Kilmer is opening up about battling throat cancer — sort of. In a profile for the New York Times, the Top Gun: Maverick star talked to journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner about his medical journey that resulted in him losing his voice and getting a tracheostomy tube. But according to the actor, he never had cancer.

Kilmer is a lifelong Christian Scientist and those who practice the religion typically avoid seeking traditional medical care. When the actor finally went to the doctor in 2014 for a big lump in his throat — he was also having a hard time swallowing and woke up in a pool of his own blood a few times — he was told it was cancer. However, Christian Science calls it the “suggestion of throat cancer,” meaning “the idea is rather than say I have it or possess it, there is a claim, there’s a suggestion that this is a fact.”

Kilmer said the Christian Science cure would be to work with a practitioner, similar to a spiritual adviser, and pray his fear away so that his body would no longer “manifest outwardly what can be diagnosed as a malady.” That meant it’s not really cancer, but that he just had to go away for awhile and pray to relocate his faith within himself. Well, his kids were having none of that.

The 61-year-old actor shares two adult children with ex-wife Joanne Whalley: Jack, 24, and Mercedes, 28. Kilmer’s kids are not Christian Scientists and his family did not want him to go try and heal by himself. The Doors star listened to them and agreed to get medical treatment.

“I just didn’t want to experience their fear, which was profound,” Kilmer said of his decision. “I would’ve had to go away, and I just didn’t want to be without them.”

As a Christian myself I am offended by your statement here. I think he probably should've gone to the hospital sooner but it is wrong to belittle people for what they believe in. Which is what your whole statement there is about.

reply

Well, it's true isn't it!? Georgia Engel, who was on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, was also a Christian Scientist and didn't want to consult doctors.

This former 80’s/90’s A list mostly movie actor who still has a big name has been kicked out of his church after undergoing surgery to save his life. He waited so long though, he still might not pull through. Val Kilmer (Christian Scientist)

Sometimes the treatment and docs will kill you faster

Most Christians are not Christian Scientists.

There is a good chance that when he found out they went over the risks involved and his voice was probably a big risk to start with... that may have been why he decided to put it off and put his faith in prayers. That is what happens with lots of people when the treatment for what they have is life altering which is what having your voice destroyed would be if you were an actor.

In the end, he may be have been just as destroyed looks wise whether he was treater sooner or later, I've known many people that had to endure cancer treatments and they would often look like they had aged overnight because of the treatments.

reply

Cancer itself and the treatment such as chemo and radiotherapy will cause infirm look in anyone. According to Val Kilmer's personality, he would be the last person to get plastic surgery on this planet. He could easily lose weight to keep his look in the past, but he didn't. He doesn't care and his talent has allowed him to be himself all the time. Does anyone notice his deformed Lt arm/elbow (you can see it clearly in Red Planet, Heat and the Salton sea whilst he was carried by his friend he couldn't straighten his arm)? It's said that he sustained a fracture from a work accident during shooting the Doors. It could be fixed easily if he has sought surgical treatment in time and followed instructions. I guess he discharged himself against medical advices at that time. Looking at his photo after the removal of his tracheostomy tube, you will notice that he looked much more like himself. Being overweight, a smoker and a drinker plus lacking of exercise make him prone to get cancer.

reply

Obviously you have never watched a loved one suffer from cancer, the treatment and after effects. It changes a person forever. Instead of commenting on his looks how about wishing him good luck and being grateful you are not experiencing what he is.

Well said

I have watched a loved one suffer from cancer, the treatment and after effects. And?
The man was an unashamedly ungrateful spoiled ass from the get-go. (read an excerpt from his memoirs). I can see why he feels so close to Cher. Don't assume to tell others what they "obviously" have done or have not.

reply

Who cares what his personality is like. That wasn't the point of the original post. And don't ASSume to tell others what they can or cannot say here.

reply

Who cares what is personality is like? Since when? The film-watching community cares, especially his fans. You can say whatever you wish, but don't expect to get a free pass.

reply

You are obviously not a fan since you posted "The man was an unashamedly ungrateful spoiled ass from the get-go" so why are you even here? I'll tell you why, just to be toxic. You're obviously a miserable person who does not belong online. People like you are the problem with online activities.

I am done with you now, I know you will continue to post nothing but negativity and hate and are not worth arguing with. Bye bye now.

According to somebody in the comments section:

Apparently he had a successful [cancer] surgery and now carries a tube that goes through his throat, hence the scarf. I wish him well.

Was wondering why he dressed in such a manner in that photo.

reply

That comment section is completely toxic.

reply

I wonder how they define successful surgery then. Not all throat surgery leaves you with a tracheotomy tube for life... but some do depending on what part of the nerves in the throat get jacked up.

reply

Often times they consider it a successful surgery if they manage to remove the cancer and the patient is still breathing. Quality of life isn't a factor in whether they consider it a success unless you were talking about something like back surgery where you were trying to get sensations back to the limbs... It would be nice if doctors were a little more honest in what is successful and what isn't, but no doctor wants to admit that it was an unsuccessful surgery.

reply

Because of cancer and treatment for it. It destroys a person's health.

reply

He's definitely had some bad plastic surgery that's only contributed to what his other health issues did to his face.

reply

What plastic surgery did he have? I'm not seeing it in the photos I've seen of him. If you look at older photos his face was always very asymmetrical and the last photo I saw of him in when he was in Europe he didn't really look like he had had any plastic surgery, just looked like someone that had some serious health problems... kind of bloated look to his face but if they did any surgey I'm not sure what they were trying to fix because nothing struck me as looking like anyone had tried to make anything better... still bloated and still lots of wrinkles around the eyes which is usually where the start any type of plastic surgery since it is some of the easier areas to smooth out.

reply

Sorry I didn't see your post sooner. I literally forgot I posted this comment until today.

My belief that he's had plastic surgery has nothing to do with bloat. VK has a classic "feminized" look that middle aged men who overdo it with plastic surgery tend to have. When doctors go overboard smoothing out facial wrinkles, men develop a womanly appearance. Here are two photos to show what I mean:

Before: https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/02/04/22/3CD6C24100000578-0-image-a-38_1486248297210.jpg
After: https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/01/31/11/9221464-0-image-a-87_1548933505125.jpg

Some people will say, "Oh, you don't get it. He's gained more weight in the second photo." True, but when he gained weight years before cancer, his face didn't look that way, either.

reply

Jeepers!!

He doesn't look great.

I always liked him but know nothing about his lifestyle or cancer.

A lot of cancer treatments are much like being poisoned and he looks like that. Of course substance abuse has the same effect.

Terrible, whatever the case.

reply

Now he looks like Tom Berenger.
