Can someone please explain Nicole Kidman's megastardom to me?

She was known in the US for years as Tom Cruise's extremely pretty wife (and she really was quite pretty in her late 20s and early 30s) who wore beautiful and unusual clothes on the red carpet. She mostly played girlfriend roles and no one knew she could act well. Then she surprised everyone by showing she could really act quite well in TO DIE FOR. When she wasn't nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for TO DIE FOR and was asked why she thought that had happened, she said to the press, "I wasn't good enough," which was widely repeated and everyone took as very humble, so there was lots of good will for her; and she also got great reviews for EYES WIDE SHUT (even thought he movie itself did not).

Then she and Tom divorced, and everyone's sympathies were with her, especially when he started going nuts after that and had all the bad press. About that time her career really took off and she started getting really A-list roles and doing very well with them, particularly in MOULIN ROUGE and THE HOURS. She was overpraised for both, and she won the Oscar mostly for making herself look silly in the false Virginia Woolf nose, but by that time she had cemented herself as a major Hollywood player. And she started refusing to do mainstream films and only doing high prestige independent films like FUR).

The problem was that after this it became more and more known that she's really a priss and thinks quite highly of herself; she also began to lose her youth and resorted to horrible Botox and fillers to extend it. But she continues to retain extremely high esteem in Hollywood. she did NOT deserve her Emmy last year for BIG LITTLE LIES, though she was quite decent (the Emmy should have gone to Claire Foy for THE CROWN), but because everyone was so impressed a pretty Hollywood Princess Perfect like Nicole allowed to show herself to play an abused wife on TV and it was the year for #MeToo, she won the Oscar.

At this point it truly does make no sense. Nothing makes much sense anymore. For instance, Hollywood has a huge wig problem. Don't ask me why but they don't know how to use wigs anymore. Every single wig in a film now looks like roadkill. And Nicole, for some strange reason, insists on using wigs for every single film and they have gotten progressively worse, to the point where they actually affect her performance. Her upcoming film, the wig is ATROCIOUS and she looks awful. And yet what do we get? hundreds of news articles commenting on how brave she is and how great and compelling her new film and hair in it looks. It's crazy.

Anyone who thinks she can't act needs to watch The Others (2001). That extraordinary performance should leave no doubt.

I won't bother defending Kidman, I believe her body of work speaks for itself, but I will say that your view of her early years ("She mostly played girlfriend roles and no one knew she could act well") seems ignorant to the esteem she already held in Australia at the time. We had the luck of being able to see her blossom with strong performances in local TV series such as Vietnam and Bangkok Hilton, and absolutely nail her first starring film role in Dead Calm, so we Australians knew very well that she could not only act, but she was special and had a screen presence that other Australian actors at the time could only hope for. I believe it was Dead Calm that brought her to the attention of Tom Cruise in the first place actually, which is why she got to audition for and land the Days of Thunder role.

It's a shame you don't appreciate her later work, but overall I think your view of her personality is a bit unfair. She's never seemed to be anything but genuine and committed to being the best actor she can be, and she always speaks highly of those she works with. I'm a fan, so I appreciate I might sound like a biased Australian, but we're pretty bloody proud of her over here!
