A stupid thing he said (NOT political)

About losing the Oscar to Martin Landau in 1995:

"I really don’t know many people who can not only remember Ed Wood but remember what Martin Landau did in it,” he said but added he was told it was more of a life achievement kind of award. “You know they were saying ‘Martin’s been nominated a few times and you’re going to be around for a while. Don’t worry.’ I was thinking I didn’t know it was a thing where if you get nominated for a few times you automatically get one. I thought it was supposed to be about impact.”

Now, that year the Oscar could have gone to either of them and it would have been great--but that's just it. Both he and Landau gave wonderful performances. But Oscar sore losers are embarrassing, and his comments are snipey and grossly inaccurate--lots of people think Ed Wood is the best Tim Burton film and that Landau's work was wonderful.

I get where he's coming from if their justification for giving Landau the award was "more of a lifetime achievement" thing. That makes it sound like it was more of a participation trophy. If that's the case, oh well. There have certainly been bigger snubs in award shows.

Look at how many acting awards Landau won for his performance in Ed Wood. There's like 15 prestigious awards he won. Screen Actors Guild, New York Film Critics Circle Award, National Society of Film Critics Award, Golden Globe Award, etc. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001445/awards?ref_=nm_awd You mean ALL that was a tribute to his career, and not necessarily for the role? I really don't think so. I remember when he won - NOBODY thought it was some kind of consolation prize - everyone thought he deserved it. He was highly acclaimed for his performance at the time. I thought Jackson was really good and entertaining in Pulp Fiction, but it never crossed my mind that he should have gotten an Oscar for it.
