There he is the 4th most successful director of all time!

reply

Wow that is incredible.

reply

Just saying...

reply

Bump...

reply

The Grinch or as I call it the Snoooze Fest was his big money maker.

reply

I still remember going to see The Grinch when it hit theaters.

The film was definitely disappointing and didn't live up to expectations, but I wouldn't call it a total loss. I still watch it every 5 years or so during the Christmas season.

reply

That's honestly quite sad to hear.

reply

Why? He's a good director and has made some classics.

reply

Fake news!

He's just pumped out a lot of films. If you look at the AVERAGE takings column, he's way down there. Nowhere near being the fourth most successful director...

reply

That's true, though looking at the averages are not without its caveats. For instance, according to the averages JJ Abrams is #1 but we know that's only the case because he made two Star Wars films, which were going to make a boatload of money regardless of who directed them.

Also, there's inflation to consider.

reply

That's interesting.

As another poster mentioned, the results are skewed somewhat by him making a ton of movies. We also have to understand that directors from earlier eras are getting screwed because the list isn't adjusted for inflation. But still, it's an interesting factoid.

I would like to see him have another big hit. He hasn't had a film perform hugely in years, and in fact I think several of his more recent films lost money. This isn't to say he hasn't made good movies in that time--he has--but audiences just didn't turn out in big numbers to see them.

reply

This looks like another dumb unadjusted list - where is Gone With The Wind or The Wizard Of Oz?
