Obviously the sound effect nails it, and we don’t see Hanks’s face hit the floor - it’s just offscreen. Maybe he’s wearing some protective padding on his head and turns his head at the last second so he doesn’t break his nose??

I managed to stop it in the middle of the faceplantation, and as he goes down he does turn his head. He also brings his right arm in front of him, as you see when he lands. Most faceplants land on the forearms first. This one is different, in that he really makes it look like he’s landed on his face.
Despite the great work by the foley artist, it’s a superb faceplant that even the great Buster Keaton would envy!
