Why the last name "Goldberg"?

I get that she felt that her birth name of Karyn was too "vanilla" or wouldn't distinguish her, so she wanted to be known as "Whoopi." That's clever, funny, and unique. But why "Goldberg" for a last name? Why not Whoopi Johnson?

reply

I don't think 'Whoopi Johnson' has the same ring to it.

True! But why Goldberg out of all the possible surnames?

Why not Smith? Clooney? Soprano? Hathaway? Obama?!!

jewish name get you movie roles

and other news, the sky is blue

reply

Why did you choose punkgirly? Why not rockgirl, metalchick or emowoman?

reply

Because I am not a metal chick, nor an emo chick. But the difference is that "punkgirly" is just a silly screen name for imdb and I can change it at any time.

Plus, no one knows who I am and the imdb screen name doesn't define me. However, giving yourself a stage name for movies that everyone knows you by is a big decision.

Fine, I guess I'll never know....oh well. :)

reply

Many celebrities go by a different stage name. Maybe it sounded better? It's really a trivial question.

reply

Not sure if that will help with your curiosity :). But it comes from Whoppi directly

Thanks! So she used a family name as Goldberg. I already knew about the "whoopie" cushion part. Ok, I think I am satisfied. Thanks!

I always thought it was just the inherent comedy in the existence of a black jew.
