No new movies as a director?

He's getting roles as an actor, and that's great, but... the guy is one of the best directors right now. What happens with "Berseker"? what happens with all the bloody movies he should be directing right now?

Damn.

I think he's still slowly easing his way back in to his fans good graces after all that controversy.I'm sure directing is probably on his mind somewhere down the line.

Kubrick after 1970 directed only 5 movies ,great directors are picky and perfectionists Gibson like Kubrick will do whatever he truly believes that will be a masterpiece. There is still bad blood in Hollywood for Mel it isn't the easiest thing to give him big movies and that is disgraceful just imagine him directing a massive historical epic like Braveheart again(the Fall of Constantinople 1453 is a great story btw),but the only certain project is a Passion of the Christ sequel and it is about 1-2 years away(Jim Caviezel isn't getting any younger and recasting sucks) and the second project is Berseker it is like a Viking version of Apocalypto that can be done with a low budget around 30-40m but it is in development hell for around 7 years ,DiCaprio was attached at some point, probably for attracting funds but it can be done with unknowns like Apocalypto, now that Mel seems to be back if he truly wants to make this movie he will...He mentioned last year an idea for a Netflix mini series or TV movies about Alexander the Great he said that only a mini series with a huge budget(like Jeffirelli's Jesus from Nazareth) can do justice to Alexander so maybe he has something in mind that would be so awesome I hope he plays Phillip or Parmenion too but it is just wishful thinking...

So he's no longer willing to use his own fortune to finance movies, then?

I know he did with his Jesus movie, but how about the other ones he directed? Did he pay for them out if his own pocket, and if he did, did he make or lose money? Thanks to anyone who knows more about his career than i do.

Well - he actually has his own production company - Icon Productions. In fact, I just saw a film 'upside down' produced by his company. I also took a look at most of the films produced by his company on wiki - quite a few ended up being losers - including some surprising titles. There are, of course, a few big hits as well - especially his older films. Anyways, the upcoming film about the dictonary dude - that's also being produced by his company and I gotto say - historical pieces like that - without action and excitement, don't do well at the box office, so he is definitely taking a risk with that film.

In other words, he is still taking some big risks - and from the financial standpoint of view, his finances are not as big as they once were, prior to his divorce ;) That means he can't risk as much as he once could.

The odds are, if he gets the right script, he'll produce the whole thing on his own without any big studio input.

Having said that - he's opted to co-produce his newest film with another company - apparently there were some issues in his soon to be released film. 'In July 2017, Gibson sued the production company Voltage Pictures over their desire to control certain aspects of the production. They refused final cut privileges and an additional five days of production at Oxford College.[10]'

Even now he's learning that if he wants something done right, he's gotto do it himself. In the end though - I suspect the new film will end up losing money - it's a historical piece without any action. They never do well - especially in today's world.
