Lorenzo the Magnificent next directing gig?

During the great Hollywood Reporter directors roundtable filmed last November, Mel was asked if he has a project he wants to make that he developed during his hiatus. Mel got very excited talking about a story set in 15th century Florence about Lorenzo de' Medici.

Last night, Mel was given a best director award at the L.A. Italia Fest. Here are two accounts of what he said:
---
[About Italy:] "I’ve been looking for excuses to go back and shoot there, and I will, hopefully pretty soon"

"I'll make a film in Italy quite soon" ... "I love Italy. I have had the fortune to shoot in the Bel Paese and I always find a way to go back."

THR writer speculates that Mel is referring to The Resurrection, but Mel has always emphasized that the Passion follow-up is several years away. I think Mel has a completed script for The Magnificent and wants to direct it next.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to read up on that.

Here's the video of Mel accepting the Italia Fest award:

At the 1 min mark he talks about wanting to make more films in Italy. Unfortunately the clapping obscures what he says.
