last decent movie ?

Heat?

reply

Yeah, Heat or Jackie Brown, '95 or '97.

Old punchy hasn’t made a decent movie this century, let that sink in a while.

reply

Stardust was made in 2007 and is a good film.

His part is fairly minor but the movie is/was good.

reply

Wrong, He's made many good to great films this century.
Meet The Parents-2000
Showtime-2002
City By The Sea-2002
Analyze That-2002
Meet The Fockers-2004
Everybody's Fine-2009
Being Flynn-2012
Silver Linings Playbook-2012
The Intern-2015
and Dirty Grandpa-2016, which was hilarious.

Your list is mostly made up of bad to average comedies, when you compare your list to his best known films of the 70's and 80's, it’s pretty clear he gave up caring a long time ago and just took roles for large pay cheques.

reply

He’s only made one movie(the good Shepard) this century. I personally enjoyed What Just Happened quite a bit.

reply

I personally think 'Heat' wasn't just decent but great ))
Everything after that... not so much. 'Stardust' and 'Limitless' are OK but his involvement is limited.

reply

Heat is a classic. but was hard pressed to think of a decent movie hed been in since then. I guess the 'Focker' movies are decent comedies (maybe the 1st one or 2 anyway... they did more right?) and Limitless is pretty good but its easy to forget he was even in that. I could've checked his imdb but couldn't be arsed

reply

I would say Analyze This and Meet the Fockers was his last good nut. 99/00

Wizard of Lies (2017) is supposed to be good. It's the Bernie Madoff movie from last year... I haven't seen it yet.

Hands of Stone (2016) is good. Above "Decent" by any objective measure compared to movies these days and De Niro is good in it.

He was a lot of fun in The Intern a few years ago, etc...

So we don't have to go back far at all to get a decent performance from De Niro, nor to see him jn a decent movie... I think people unrealistically expect Taxi Driver, The Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino or Novecento whenever they see his name... No 'working actor' is going to have a resume that only has those movies... And to be frank, Holkywood isn't churning out those types of movies with regularity anymore...

Even highly selective actors, take as an extreme example Daniel Day Lewis, will be involved in some lesser projects... But De Niro is a working actor, day in day out, not a recluse who only appears for a handful of movies a decade...

Even in his worst movies, he's never less than compelling... Given the movie's context, e.g. that Grandpa dick-joke movie he made with Zach Effron, his role in Joy...

reply

I'll go with The Score (2001).

reply

grandpa 3? or was it 4?

reply

I really liked The Intern, one of De Niro's lesser known films. It was a lot of fun.

reply

It's probably his last truly great performance and last truly classic film, but he's had some very good films and performances since.

Sleepers (he's pretty good in that)
Marvin's Room (not a big role but the film is good imo)
Cop Land
Jackie Brown
Ronin
Flawless (one of his underrated roles imo)
Meet The Parents (one of his better comedic roles, the first film is a very good comedy)
Silver Linings Playbook

None of them come close to Heat, but the gap between Meeting the Parents and SLP is 12 years but he did have a good patch after Heat.

reply

I enjoyed Machete, even the score, showtime, city by the sea and 15 minutes were descent.
