I would say that, He was truly great.

I just think the films he has done the last decade or so have been mostly bad, He probably has done more great films and great performances and some that are among the greatest ever

No actor surpassed De Niro

Robert De Niro's career was pretty much 1973-1980, and a few 1990s films

Since the late 90s / early 2000s, he's tarnished his reputation with subpar movies

Marlon Brando did the same thing. His career was basically the 1950s and 1972-1973, 1979. Everything from 1976-1978 and 1980 onwards was him just making fun of himself, or doing it for the money

But even in his prime, he was nowhere near as good as De Niro
