Toms outburst wins over public

The comments I've read have been overwhelmingly positive, praising Tom for actually taking the virus seriously and being concerned about how the shutdown means unemployment and homelessness for some in the industry.

Yup...
If he agrees with mask wearing or not he understands that they can be shutdown. He is concerned about others jobs. Not his own but others who REALLY have to rely on these movies for income. Tom doesn't have to act anymore if he doesn't want to. The people who work behind the scenes most likely still do.

reply

Yup it is a "gig industry", and Hollywood is certainly feeling the pain as most are independent contractors.

reply

The only reason I see it as a positive is because we got this out of it....

Sorry, but Tom was acting like a spoiled brat.

If I was an actor on that set and overheard Tom Cruise losing his cool that day, I would have grabbed ahold of Tom and slapped him hard to chill out and make him apologize to that crew member

reply

With a movie that will make probably half a billion dollars, he can't afford for it to be shut down with a covid cluster.

reply

He's not only an actor on the Mission: Impossible movies, he owns the rights to the franchise and is an Executive Producer, he is the person most responsible for this production. This movie will be shut down if they don't follow the guidelines... if they are shut down the movie will be further delayed and the budget will keep going up. He actually came across as nice on that leaked audio, he's being very strict and warning these knuckleheads one last time to cut it out... anyone else would have just fired them on the spot.

reply

There's a difference between a "spoiled brat" and someone who doesn't want a project being shut down. A spoiled brat acts selfishly while he was also concerned about everyone else.

reply

He was acting like a responsible leader. Apology not accepted. We need to grab ahold of you, beat you senseless and have you arrested and forced to work in morgues full of covid victims.

reply

Cruise is right. I agree with him 100%.

I'm a fan of his movies, but he sounded like an angry drunk. The way he spoke made it seem his main was the movie industry rather than people's health & safety, so a lot of the praise he's receiving seems misplaced. Also misplaced are the criticisms about him being a millionaire who could pay for/donate blah blah blah as well as the anti-Scientologists who need the thinnest pretext to launch into their hobby-horse. A less charitable but still plausible criticism is that he was mostly concerned about this particular production (that's when he became most livid, as I recall).

But again, Cruise definitely wants to promote the industry as a whole. It's why he did publicized seeing Tenet in a theater.

reply

Yeah I agree with him. The insurance for this film must be astronomical. To see people flouting the rules is serious.

It's not difficult to keep a mask on 🤷‍♀️

reply

Yeah. It's annoying as hell but not the end of the world. Just a few months to keep enduring this and then we won't have to anymore.

I have a feeling that this is going to be with us for a long time, there are too many antivaxers in this country.

You can take your poison pharma trash, and shove it up your ass you POS!

reply

Jesus Christ. You know, the more insulting names you call me, the less I want to reply to you because you sound like a psycho. If you’d like to have a conversation you need to calm the fuck down, I haven’t been disrespectful to you personally.

reply

That's what happens when you try to force a muzzle on me, or inject me with poison! You get a reaction you may not like! Try treating me like a free human with control over my airways and my body, and I'll treat you with respect.

reply

I'm not doing anything to you, thanks for letting me know that you're psychotic.

reply

You sheep were sorta funny at first, but you've become a serious problem now that you think you can police/shame us into covering our airways, and injecting ourselves with poison. If you continue down this path, you will be dealt with in the harshest way possible. DO NOT TREAD ON ME!

reply

Scared little boy is still afraid of needles.

reply

Go fuck yourself you medical mask wearing SOB!

reply

You have anger management issues. Hopefully, you don't have a wife or kids.

reply

Look here buttrider, you can take your new abnormal, social anti-distancing, contact tracers, medical checkpoints, face diapers, and poison shots, and SHOVE THEM UP YOUR ASS! Got it yet fool!?! I am not falling for your BS! Damn right I'm angry!!! I have every right to be. Now fuck the fuck off asshole!

reply

Calm down, madam.

reply

Right?! this guy is so full of fear, makes me feel bad for him. I wouldn't want to live with that everyday and night. I hope he has someone to at least check in on him now and then because it's very self destructive.

reply

I'm pretty sure he's kidding with this over-the-top rage thing... but on the Internet, you never know for sure.

reply

Cruise went too far when he called whomever it was he was yelling at “mother fu**ers.” And people are naive if they think he cares about lost jobs. As producer he has tens, or maybe over a hundred, of millions of dollars riding on this movie not being shutdown.

reply

Cruise is putting a lot of work and personal money into the project from what I understand. So I completely understand his frustration and anger. But it was absolutely inappropriate and unprofessional with how he treated the workers. If he had done that to me, not only would I have walked, I would have submitted a complaint of harassment or whatever I could legally do to reprimand him. It sounds like there was a 2nd rant and people have already walked; good for them. I don't care how stressed you are, I don't care how long or many times you have to tell people about covid procedures. There is no reason to talk to people that way. Keep it up and there won't be anyone to work your movie.

reply

I disagree. Covid consequences in a workplace is serious shit. And people who still won't do what has to be done to stop the spread should be fined. Nothing less. As far as I know, getting yelled at — which they deserved, since they knew the rules — is better than to be fined or losing one's job.

reply

Are you sure they deserved it? It has yet to come out exactly what they did to warrant this kind of unprofessional attack. Was it because they weren't wearing masks? Doesn't sound like it. Or simply too close for Tom's liking? What were they doing? just standing there? going over production paper work? eating? were they purposefully standing there? waiting for someone to look away so they can stand closer and just got caught? You can't keep people 100% 6ft a part at ALL times; it's impossible, especially in a work environment. Especially in a theatrical work environment as a majority of that work is human to human contact. And were these the SAME people Tom has seen before? or were they just, unfortunately, in the wrong place at the wrong time? I'm sorry, there is no excuse for this behavior.

I am one of the 'Covid is over-hyped' people. I find this idea of a 'gold standard' ridiculous as there is no way you can stop someone from getting sick. But I also understand the risk businesses have regarding lawsuits and insurance and so need to do what they possibly can to 'keep people safe.' I understand and empathize with Tom's stress but you still need to act professionally. That rant was unacceptable. And it sounds like others agree and Tom is taking a much needed break.

They wre filming in London, and here you have the protocols:
https://s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/filmlondon/COVID-19-Guidance-for-Location-Filming-in-London.pdf

Crew must keep 2 metres apart from each other. In case that's not possible, they should minimize the time in contact and wear a mask. So it's not that difficult: those cases you can't keep 2 metres distance, you put on your mask (if you weren't wearing it already) and you go straight to the point.

If the reprimand was because of distance, that means the crew members were too close without wearing a mask.
