Not as short as people think

The man is 5'7¾, a hair under 5'8". One inch & a quarter below the average for fully grown American males (5'9")
Yet people think he's a 5'2" manlet like Kevin Hart. That's just plain not true and makes no sense.
He does frequently date and co-star among tall women who are 5'10"+ and wear heels. This gives the illusion that he's tiny.

reply

Cruise's biography wants you to think that. He's only about 5 foot - 4 inches tall.
When the Jack Reacher movie came out, the director commented about how at 5-8 he was 90% of the height but 100% of the character. One of the critics who knew Cruise commented "5-8? Where did those extra four inches come from?"
Also Katie Holmes who is almost 5-10 stood almost a full head over him. And she never wore heels when in public with him. Can't do that if he's 5-8.

reply

Incorrect. Plenty of pictures online of them together, she is wearing heels in them and is not even close to a foot taller even with the heels on.

reply

Yep, Cruise haters might "wish" he were only 5'4" but he is actually a little under 5'8"

reply

Cruise wears his own "heels". Have you ever heard of "elevator shoes" or "lifts"? Which are men's shoes with a hidden high heel? They can add 2-4" to a man's height!

You can spot them by looking at the upper part of a man's foot (or "vamp"), where the metatarsals rise to meet the ankle, if the angle of the foot is 30+ degrees or is steeper than it is in other pictures, then that man is taller than nature intended him to be.

reply

He may wear lifts, but I still don't believe he's below 5'7.5

reply

If I ever see him in person I'll definitely estimate his height, and take a good hard look at his shoes when I do.

reply

I'm not sure what the average height is for males in the US, but I think for models it's minimum height of 5' 11" for men and 5' 8" for women. I think Tom Cruise's movies help make him larger than life. Nothing wrong with that.

As for him and Katie Holmes in heels, PaladinNJ is wrong -- https://im.rediff.com/movies/2012/jul/02slde4.jpg

reply

I was wrong. It was Nichole Kidman who stated she never wore heels when out in public with him. But those lifts in his shoes are very visible in that photo as well.

reply

5'8 is below average.

reply

5'9" is the average male height in the US. So yes, Cruise is below average. At 5ft 7 ¾ (172.1 cm) he is 1 and a quarter inch below average.

reply

He's SHORT, period especially for a leading man in movies but a lot of short people in this thread are downplaying it to feel better about themselves. He's below average. If he was a Chinese action star he would be average. Maybe not even then.

reply

You could also say that people who are underestimating his height are just doing it because of tall poppy syndrome. I´m taller than Cruise´s purported 5´8 so no height insecurities from me, I also think he´s definitely taller than 5´4. Kidman would have dwarfed him when they were together if he was that height. She was obv taller but not by that much.

reply

So he's 5'8 instead of 5'4. He's still short.

Based on the number of pro-Cruise replies you have made to this topic, you have plenty of height insecurities. You brag about being taller than Cruise, well so are 70% of the men in America. Big deal. You're probably a shade over 5'8 or perhaps 5'9 and downplaying your shortcomings by idolizing short celebrities.

reply

He really seems to have an inferiority complex over his height. There are many men out there who are short, but they've learned how to adapt in one way or another. I do remember seeing photos of him wearing special shoes that created the illusion that he was taller, but the thing is, he shouldn't let it get in the way of his self-image. There are many male actors who were not giants who did just fine in the biz, and even used it to their advantage.

reply

Agreed.

He's not even THAT short. I don't think a man gets into "really short" territory until they drop to about 5'5". Plenty of guys are 5'6" and above and it's not a big deal.

As you say, there are plenty of actors on the shorter side. Al Pacino I believe is only 5'7" and he's a legend. You never hear anyone talking about his height and it doesn't seem like most people think of him as "Al Pacino, that short guy."

reply

Let's not forget Peter Dinklage or Warwick Davis. Nobody makes fun of them for their height, and they're both dwarves!

reply

if hed been 6ft 2 maybe he wouldn't be so famous? he seemed to emerge as a star in the early/mid 80s when the smaller good looking plucky/underdog type of leading man was 'in' (e.g. Michael J Fox/Matthew Broderick)..and also Cruise was kind of similar looking to Christopher Reeve so had he been big like him maybe film execs would've been like 'well just get Christopher Reeve'

reply

Al Pacino was 5’6 at his tallest.

reply

I hate that I know what you mean by manlet.

reply

He could even be the full 5'8. Nobody can really notice 1/4 inch. He pulls off looking about 5'10 with the enhanced footwear.

reply

He's not midget but still short for a hollywood action star.

I trust older pictures more (I don't think elevator shoes were that big in the 80s, I may be wrong) and here with shortie Emilo Estevez. He's got a few inches over him so yeah, he's not as short as people think he is.

reply

That's a good point to look more at the older pictures. Here's one with Dustin Hoffman who's a legit short guy

reply

Yup. I am confident that Tom is 5'8 as claimed. He sometimes wears lifts to make himself maybe 5'11 but who cares? He's an actor.

reply

Cruise is a manlet that lies about his height. He could be as small as 5'5.

reply

You have the biggest case of tall poppy syndrome. The funny thing is, Cruise is taller than alot of other shorter actors like Danny Devito, Michael J Fox, numerous others, but he gets the most flack because he is the most successful.

There´s a pic of him next to Rob Lowe in The Outsiders. He isnt that much shorter, maybe 2-3 inches. Next thing you know you´ll be saying Rob Lowe is 5´7 lol.

reply

You sound like a pretentious douchebag. I don't even know what that is and don't care enough to look it up but if it was an insult, it went over my head, sorry.

What I do know is that Cruise is short for an action star or even compared to the typical American man. No amount of spin changes that. When you start using Devito (5'0) and Fox (5'4) in comparison, you know he's short.

I like Cruise in almost all that I've seen him in and never thought about his height until I read it mentioned everywhere. The only people that are overly concerned about height are shortish people that are insecure about their own height. Don't try to spin 5'7ish as average or not short. Not buying it, sorry. The man uses elevator shoes for a reason.

reply

Yeah, that's short. Lol

reply

He's 2 inches below the average height of any North American. "Short" is debatable. I'm saying he's not a tiny person like so many people claim.

reply

For an action star he is short.

reply

He's shorter than John Wayne, James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston,Clint Eastwood, Cary Grant, and Sean Connery.

reply

I'm 5'0 so he'd still tower above me

and he'd still tower above both my dad and brother who are 5'1 and 5'2 even if at shortest he's 5'4. People getting worked up about him being 'short' are hilarious.
