He doesn't have the same starpower he used to and some actors might be avoiding him because of his Scientology ties, but I think he's also choosing movies that give him a large percentage of the box office share, which means no other star who can also claim a high percentage.

"choosing movies that give him a large percentage of the box office share"

Why? It's not like he hasn't cashed in a gazillion dollars practicing this financial strategy for the better part of 3 decades. He shouldn't need the money.

reply

Because sometimes it means more money than a fixed salary and yes, Hollywood actors do like money. I'm sure Scientology does as well. Also, it's a practice preferred by producers in case a movie flops. Tom Cruise isn't the only one, it happens more and more often these days.

reply

Yes I understand he's always done it to make as much money as possible. No one's expecting him to change.

My point was to ask why he wouldn't choose to deviate from that formula once in a while to work with actors more in his box office league. That by itself would help insure against a flop more than just his average film. Plus if you're a big name star like he is the trick is to have multiple films in production ready to be released to ensure against flops. It sure looks like ego plays a part, like he can't handle being on a set where he doesn't call all the shots.

I'm sure Scientology takes a chunk, but at the same time, he's practically the lead figure of that cult. No one's going to be forcing him to tithe to the hilt.

reply

I do get the impression he's a perfectionist (and a narcissist), so you might be right that he prefers to be the one who calls the shots.

No, I don't think so. Cruise has just the right amount of ego.

reply

[deleted]

Oh that is true. Cruise has a reputation for that.

reply

I think he actually might be slightly too humble. Maybe he can get some therapy to develop his self esteem.

reply

Trouble is, who is as good or better than Cruise aside from Xenu or LRH himself?

reply

Obviously no one.

reply

No. His ego is on point. The problem is once you're a super star, you don't do movies like Interview with the Vampire anymore, where you get to shine against other big stars like Pitt. This is because obvious control and box office reasons, but at the same time, it's not bringing the best out of you, as an actor. Tom Cruise has become something of a paper champion, set up only against talent he can outclass in every respect. Which makes for weaker films. Even the new MI film which has him facing off against Superman, Cavill isn't so great. He's no damn Tom Cruise. Participating in ensemble pictures would lower his box office worth. At this point in his career, he's kind of stuck. As he gets older and can no longer shoulder these blockbusters on his own, we'll see Tom finally start collabing.

reply

This is an interesting point. Before, he could not afford to be picky with his roles; now that he's established and can selectively pick box office hits, there is no incentive for him to be cast in a serious film like Magnolia.

It could also be that he just doesn't enjoy those types of films. Maybe action is more his flair. Then again, even DeNiro had Heat in 1995 before his inevitable fall, and he was 51-52 at the time.

Times are certainly different.

He's simply the biggest movie star in the history of the world. With that comes a certain amount of ego. It's a human thing I suppose.
