Why Does he Hate Bond?

I've read a lot about him and apparently he hates the character of James Bond. Does anybody know why?

He doesn't just got tired of playing him, there is a difference.

Yeah, I think he got a bit sick and tired of everything that came with it, which in some ways is understandable.

Back then the kind of "hero worship insanity" that he ended up getting was reserved for such as the Beatles, and probably not so much for film actors. He was probably surprised and caught a bit off-guard by it all, as I don't think they expected Bond to turn out to be the sensation that it did.

Nowadays the insanity and hero worship is given to even Big Brother "celebrities".

It was probably the frustration that it overshadowed almost everything else in the first half of his career, even his critically acclaimed performances in lower budget movies.

He also hated working with Harry Saltzman (financial dispute?). I once read that his contract for Diamonds Are Forever stipulated that he didn't have to deal with Saltzman on set. Can't guarantee this is true but it would explain a lot.

I'm sure that once he had a string of big hits in the late 80s and early 90s (The Untouchables, Last Crusade and Hunt For Red October) the resentment must have faded. He was now Connery the movie star, not Connery the former James Bond.

By comparison I doubt Pierce Brosnan will ever escape the character's shadow. Mamma Mia! was a fluke.

He got tired of playing the character and didn't like the extreme spotlight the films placed him in. The fans were quite exuberant for these films back then. One story was of a woman jumping into Connery's car through an open window while he was traveling to or from a premiere.

He planned on being done after You Only Live Twice, but was coaxed back for Diamonds Are Forever by a huge sum of money at the time. He donated that money to a boys' school in Scotland if I'm not mistaken.

He also hated the producers after an unknown incident. Albert R. Broccoli claimed he had no idea what he did to become so despised by Connery that they wouldn't even speak anymore. So not sure what the story is there, but he did have a grudge with the producers.

Connery has refused to have any involvement with the franchise for years now, I think he did Never Say Never Again (which was a rival Bond film made with no involvement from Broccoli or Saltzman) partly for the money and also just to aggravate Broccoli who was very concerned that NSNA would outperform Octopussy which came out the same year, but Octopussy grossed more in the end.

Connery refused to have any involvement with the series' 50th anniversary as an Oscar reunion with all the Bond actors was planned but Connery and Brosnan refused. The role that Albert Finney plays in Skyfall was also especially written with Connery in mind, but Connery turned the part down.
