He's turned into George Lucas

A weird old man who makes bad movies that focus on effects over story.

Who the fuck releases a 12 year old movie just so they can have the number 1 spot at the box office? What a dork.

There's still a market for this crapfest? I went to see it in 09. It was James Cameron. I like many of his movies and it was his first movie in a decade. But we all know this movie sucks. It's shallow on story and plot and even it's "strengths" - effects and action - aren't good. I've enjoted movies that aren't particularly deep if they are entertaining. But the effects and action are not anything special. It's a fake looking movie with anti-climatic action and a plagiarized story.

reply

I agree with everything that you've written. I too went to see Avatar because I was a fan of hiscearlier work and also because it was the first movie that he had done in a decade. I wish I could get my money back. It was terrible. I would have walked out, but I went with family so I was stuck there. After the film ended I asked what my family what they thought of it and they all said that they wanted to leave after the first 20 minutes...

To be honest I don't know who is worse Cameron or Lucas. Cameron for making four sequels to this rubbish or Lucas for being dumb enough to sell Star Wars, and then complain when disney put out crappy movies. At least Cameron wasn't dumb enough to do that. Sure he list the rights to The Terminator, but I believe that that was due to his divorce. Then again Cameron had a hand in the last Terminator movies so...

reply

I had a very similar feeling as when I saw the prequels for the first time. I walked out telling myself, "That was........good?" I realized much soon I didn't like it than with the prequels.

I would normally say Lucas - he not only dicked around with the originals multiple times - he really went over-the-top with the (bad) CGI in Episodes II and III. He even added to highly-mocked "NoooOoOoOOOooo...." to ROTJ. He's clearly picking a fight with the fans at this point, especially when he refuses to release the original unaltered versions. Lucas has been at this for decades.

Though I do agree Cameron is so obsessive and arrogant (to announce 4 sequels nobody wants) that he could surpass Georgie Boy.

reply

He absolutely was sticking it to the fans on purpose - don't forget adding "Maclunky" to the already destroyed Han-shot-first scene, as a last fuck-you in the 4k release before he sold to Disney. What Lucas has done cannot be forgiven. He even claimed that the original prints were destroyed in the making of the special editions, which essentially means that he destroyed them on purpose... because digital scans don't magically ruin film prints. Or, he lied, and they still exist. Either way he's a stubborn, destructive asshole.

The worst thing Cameron has done so far is ruin the T2 4k release with obscene DNR, along with constantly delaying The Abyss and True Lies Blu-ray/4k releases. Doesn't hold a candle to Lucas (let's not even mention Indy 4).

To date, Avatar is the only movie he did that for, and there was still a story. These aren't Avengers movies he's making.

You don't know if it was him that decided to release it, or if it was Disney, which now owns it. They have a history of doing this after all.

You seem to have based your entire opinion of him on Avatar only.

reply

I wanna say he re-released - or there were a few DVD versions - of Titanic at least once: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/titanic-re-release-to-hit-theaters-for-20th-anniversary/.

I base me opinion on him that way because that's who he is now. He's a weird, obsessive, insanely fussy filmmaker who makes movies with bad CGI now. He's made TWO movies since 1997 because he has been so consumed by his silly little blue world and the Titanic for the last 25 years. And he's talked about his Avatar sequels for a decade. This is who he is now.

reply

after 12 years a new generation of kids can experience Avatar in a theater 😊

reply

You mean on netflix. Theaters are a thing of the past.

reply

Netflix is the McDonalds of film

reply

You people who say this.... Do you not KNOW about the pandemic?

New releases on Disney Plus. are $30. NOTHING about that is cheaper than the theater.

reply

He didnt say it was cheaper,
he said "Theaters are a thing of the past."

albeit temporarily presumably

reply

Why are theaters a thing of the past (to those making the argument)? Because of the COST.

reply

I thought he meant because of covid,
people still seems happy with the cost pre covid,
and a family of 4 would spend a lot more then $30 on a visit.

reply

Not in Asia

reply

🤣 except movies are still pulling in BILLIONS of dollars in the theaters.

Having first and third place for highest grossing films can really kill those creative spirits, why bother trying when you're king of the world? And seriously, AVATAR is such a bad movie in so many ways that it's absurd that it is higher grossing from his significantly better movie, Titanic.

reply

Titanic was when Jim still had his magic - a brilliant blend of practical and digital effects along with an engrossing story/characters. Some cheesiness here and there, but overall it's close to a masterpiece in my opinion. It'll probably be his last great film.

Success blunts the talents of most people, and it took creating the highest grossing film of all time for it to get to Cameron. Then it happened again with Avatar, for totally different reasons. He's basically a victim of his own success at this point, and feels the need to only direct the highest grossing, biggest movies ever now. What better way than to do FOUR sequels to make it BIG?

Can he hit the jackpot again? I don't think so. Just look at the movies he's been peripherally involved with lately - Dark Fate was a disaster, and Alita was... good, at best. He got lucky with Avatar and the 3-D angle, but that's totally played out. I'd like to believe he's spent all this time creating classic scripts filled with emotion and compelling characters, but I'm not sure he still has it in him.

Maybe if he stripped some of his hubris away and did something much lower budget, he could create something special again. But that'll probably never happen. It's like what Viggo Mortensen said about Peter Jackson:

"Peter, I was sure he would do another intimately scaled film like Heavenly Creatures..." Mortensen continued. "But then he did King Kong. And then he did The Lovely Bones -- and I thought that would be his smaller movie. But the problem is, he did it on a $90 million budget. That should have been a $15 million movie. The special effects thing, the genie, was out of the bottle, and it has him."

reply

The funny thing is, I don't think it's a lack of creative spirit or interest. I know exactly what your saying. If he had no interest left, he wouldn't be trying to undertake this massive (and absurd) goal of trying to make FOUR Avater sequels. Like Lucas, he just seems to think making a good movie now is all about (bad) CGI and green screen.

reply

The problem is that the genera of movie he works on demands special effects over story. High budget high grossing, usually when you're constricted by budget you have to make a movie better in other ways, especially story. To draw parallel, video games have become some what of a race to visuals over gameplay. There are times when re-releases are just enhanced visuals and reduced gameplay (yes, they actually remove stuff you could do in the original game).

It's sad, but companies have discovered that a bunch of pretty visuals can easily sell many people better than a richer story.

reply

What you call "bad CGI" is actually a very important technological innovation, which will make the history of cinema. Thats why Avatar will always be an important movie, and deserves the first place over Avengers:S**tgame

reply

I wonder if it's just some effect us humans are having that have watched movies for over a decade or so. We're so used to today's CGI and tech that we've become desensitized to anything less. We've pretty much done most of everything for the most part so everything put out these days seem boring or cliche or repetitive or predictable that it doesn't excite the human senses no more. Once in awhile you do get something that gives that 'WOW' factor.

Do you want some cheese with your whine, dumbass?

all great film man eventually turn into hack!

they lose touch after 3 film.

lucas have good run from american grafiti to willow. then he turn to shit.

cameron have good run from piranha 2 to true lie. then he become chick flik extraordinairs

reply

once testosterone production runs dry - men turn into pussies
Looks like Cameron has finally achieved his goal of working out the toxic testosterone out of his system lol

reply

yes. he hand in his man card when he make titanic - movie for woman. giant chick flick.

even though cameron would be seen as "woke" by 80s standard - he have strong female character in T1-2, Abyss and Aliens, and diversity like miles dyson being black (probably wrote as white man i dont know), his early film still excellent. proof that you can have strong female if you write good script and story.

but his waste of time now. he is making fun of comic book film? the nerve. this is him praising terminator: genesis, worst film of all times:

reply

I liked his strong-female character-led films as well. I recently saw 'emily the criminal' and it was also pretty well done - featuring a strong chick character. A strong female character does not equal woke, if the female does things she can physically do and by using wit, intelligence and strength of character.

Cameron criticizing the superhero films is great as there's a lot to criticize them for, but when he puts out the same cgi/no story fest as a rebuttal, he's now gaslighting. Alas, he's been gaslighting for a while now when advertising his utterly crappy terminator sequels. Cameron is now a businessman first and foremost - everything else is a VERY distant 2nd. Having said that.... him saying shit about testosterone.... what a poor decision from a business standpoint of view, unless it gets him that Blackrock money. It reminds me of Jordan Peele, who said that he'd never put a white male lead in his films because he's seen that movie before - racist piece of shit.

reply

"I recently saw 'emily the criminal' and it was also pretty well done - featuring a strong chick character. "

yes there are many good film with female lead. female lead only work if it is talented actor in role (like signourney or hamilton), with talented writer and director. no agenda or politic, just commitment to making good film - hollywood must return to this, we are tired of woketard. most shit film you see today with female lead have shit actor like captain pancakes and agenda.

"Having said that.... him saying shit about testosterone..."

he did? hypocrite! his early film are testosterones driven, even with female lead his film always have male cast and testosterones. very disappoint to read this!

reply

i just wish hed make another movie without the animation. Titanic, True Lies, Aliens, Terminator/s, etc are all classic films. Im not much into animated movies (never saw the first avatar so I dont know if its primarily real actors or animation), but I did see Avatar 2. It was ok, but like I said - NOT into cartoons.
