Better director than George Lucas?

I'm leaning towards Cameron but he definitely tapered off after 1991's T2.

Lucas was never a great director. He has a wonderful imagination and dreams up fantastic worlds, but he’s not good behind the camera. How many great films has he directed..?

By contrast, Cameron is a masterful writer and director, churning out classic after classic, even though things started to taper off after True Lies. That said, Titanic and Avatar have great moments amongst their weaker qualities.

Lucas' early stuff was great.

Lucas only directed 1 good movie, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Episode 1, 2 and 3 were entertaining enough but not great.
Cameron has a few great and a few good..Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens, Titanic, Abyss, Avatar, even True lies is alright.
So Cameron, easily.

Apples and oranges.

Lucas' films were experimental. He was testing new innovations in filmmaking. He revolutionized SFX, movie sound, animation and CGI in films. He also propelled B-Movie sci-fis to blockbuster status.

Cameron repeatedly used Lucas' innovations in his own films.

Cameron is a good director, but Lucas deserves recognition in cinematic history for his contributions.

Doesn't take much to be better director than Lucas.

I've always thought Lucas is a great producer, hammy writer and a mediocre director. The slightly annoying contradiction being American Graffiti, which I remember as a pretty good film. Cameron has a fistful of great films to his name though my personal favourite, The Abyss, seemed to miss it's audience. So what do I know.
