WTF Happened to NICOLAS CAGE?

WTF Happened To This Celebrity? – The JoBlo series that examines the careers of stars and filmmakers who may have fallen out of the spotlight, and tells where they are now!

Nicolas Cage has had one of the wildest careers in Hollywood history. From modest beginnings (for someone in the Coppola family, anyway) and noteworthy early movies, Cage gained notice and eventual awards for his stellar and unique work. Financial troubles and questionable spending habits may have led to a more recent onslaught of direct-to-video “paycheck” movies, but even that is punctuated by memorably bizarre performances and occasional critical praise. Put the bunny back in the box and check out “WTF Happened to Nicolas Cage!”

At least Nic Cage turns up to do work. He tries.

Bruce Willis on the other hand fell asleep at the wheel years ago

I don't think it's all about money. I was just listening to Cage in an interview where he referenced a lot of artistic styles through history. He described Face-Off as being cubist. I think he legitimately enjoys abstract concepts and understanding others' visions while collaborating at the same time.

Besides all that though, I'm sure he has some royalty deals worked out on previous films, or other investments. He wouldn't need to work on movies if he didn't want to.

He is still rocking it. He always gives 100%. I still think he has a few more future classics in him.

I don't think it was 100% intentional, but it has sort of worked out for him in the long run

If he hadn't gone that route, what would he be doing? Oscar bait movies? More Scorsese and Charlie Kaufman? That would be cool too, but then he'd just be another acclaimed actor

Instead he's found a way to become a zany cultural icon. Everyone I ever talk to about Cage in person pretty much loves him and his ridiculous performances. He WAS seen as a washout for several years, but he has been seeing a cultural resurgence. He went from acclaimed actor, to action movie star, to VOD ghost, and is now starting to be viewed as an enigmatic national treasure (no pun intended)

I read somewhere that Nic Cage has pretty much by this point outside of Keanu Reeves, become the internet's favorite actor.

Based on my own personal anecdotal evidence, I'd have to say I think that's right

And, with all due respect to Keanu Reeves, he didn't need an undisputed smash-hit (John Wick) or a sterling public image to gain that status. He did it mainly through his performances translating excellently into memes, gifs, and quotable lines
