Won an oscar?

For acting?! You have to be kidding. I've just watched her in The Sentinel, and she's embarrassing.

I know - I suspect she also benefitted from LA Confidential being such a good film. I wonder about the 'career oscar' bit though: I know it's not an honorary award like Peter O'Toole's, but she hasn't exactly had much of a career in great films. In fact, looking down the list of films she's been in, most look pretty flimsy. Blind date? My Stepmother is an Alien? I haven't seen Fool for Love, but it's not a film that troubled the academy at all, nor many others. She's incredibly sexy carrying Garth to the bedroom in Waynes World 2 though...

She's really terrible in almost everything she's been in.

8 Mile
Cellular (fun movie, but she's awful)
The Sentinel (unintentionally hilarious when she's walking through the parking garage and there's gunfire)
I Dreamed of Africa (god-awful movie)
Bless the Child (ditto)
9 1/2 Weeks

She was "meh" in Charlie St. Cloud.

L.A. Confidential was a good film, and she fit the role well, so she lucked out. But that's literally the only decent performance I've ever seen her give.

I wonder if Kim felt that now that she had an Oscar (and thus, people could look at her as a “real actress” and not just a hot chick) she didn’t really need Alec Baldwin anymore (they were more or less, co-dependent on each other) to help prop her up. And maybe Kim felt that she could afford going on a three year hiatus post-LA Confidential because she would always have the caveat of being an “Academy Award Winner” (thus, she could in her mind, pick and choose any project that she wanted).

I’ve recently read a theory that Kim was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Oscar partially out of sympathy since she was staging a comeback of sorts (after the Boxing Helena lawsuit, her bankruptcy issues, etc.).
