Really? Going Down That Road Again?

Didn't "9-1/2 Weeks" almost end her career in the day? **to those of you too young to remember, it was a big flop that damaged her career at the time, and virtually brought Mickey Rourke's career to an end**

Now she's going to be the older, former lover of Grey in the new 50 Shades movie? My God....talk about being desperate for work.

Wasn't it the film that made her a sex-symbol? I also believe that it was quite popular in Europe, even if it flopped in the US.

I've never seen it, but everyone seemed to be talking about it in the late 80s. They even spoofed it in Hot Shots!

She was already a sex symbol here in the US. Not sure what they thought of the movie in Europe, but it was roundly hated in the US.

9 1/2 weeks made her the biggest sex symbol on the planet(put her right up there with the likes of hayworth, gardner, monroe and bardot)
before that she was a starlett on the rise...nothing compared too the star she was after the film came out.

in france the film played up to the new millennium.

from when the film came out to the end of the 90s,kim basinger was in the top 5 of the most bankable actresses on the planet(julia roberts, jodie foster and michelle pfeiffer were also in that small group of actreses that could open a movie in botswana or siberia just with their name above the title on a poster. from asia to europe kim basinger s face was on every magazine cover.

i know its hard to believe for certain (talking to u snoke buddy)but an actor (or a singer or artist whatever)career,or worth in it,isint decided solely by the popularity they experience in one country.

the world is pretty big my friend, and kim basinger is a pretty damn big star in most of it.

I agree with what carlo has stated in response to your post, but I'll add to it by saying that prior to '9 and a 1/2 Weeks' Basinger's two biggest films had been 'Never Say Never Again' where she was simply a Bond Girl (and how many of those are international superstars?) and 'The Natural', a moderate hit in which she played a femme fatale type. But although Basinger is regarded as one of the, if not the, sex symbols of the 1980s it was only around the late 80s following the notorious '9 and a 1/2 Weeks' that she acquired that tag.

Never seen the movie.
she knows she is older now. better to see her play an older former lover
than Trying to play a young so called sexy thing.
she seems to me to have moved into older parts with ease.
starting with her role as Eminem's mother in 8 mile. an alcoholic mother.
most beauty queens/sex symbols would not accept playing such parts.
I think she is just realistic.

I don't know in the USA, but here in Europe "9-1/2 Weeks" was the biggest hit back then, and especially years after. I guess "9-1/2 Weeks" is one of the most underrated movies in the USA, but here, among few other movies like "Bodyguard" or "Basic Instinct" is actually considered the cult movie that is still watched much often on TV. I remember that you had to wait for ages to rent it in the video stores.

However, I am not quite sure about Kim’s choice to sign for this role in "Fifty Shades of Grey" sequel. Being sceptic, I think that the only good thing in this sequel will actually be her performance. But nevertheless, this sequel is foregone critically determined to fiasco.

Anyway, it’s going to earn a lot of money, so good for Kim to come back in any big box office hit at all. Love her, and whish her more good roles.

Whilst I agree with what you say about Kim, I have to disagree with your comment about Bond girls. You can hardly call the likes of Halle Berrie or Honor Blackman 'just Bond girls'!

I was gonna let you *beep* me, but I got my rag, and I know how you hate a mess

reply

Never heard of "Honor Blackman" (I'll look this person up after this I post this). But Never Say Never Again wasn't an official "Bond" movie, so technically, she wasn't a "Bond Girl".
