favorite underrated JW film

For me , it is " Donovan's Reef ".
I know it is not one of his top films , but I still find it enjoyable. It was well directed and I really enjoyed the cast of Lee Marvin, Jack Warden, Cesar Romero, Lamour , Allen, the children.just everybody.
Many consider Hatari , his best " non-western " , but I prefer Donovan's Reef - jmho

The Shepherd of the Hills

Always loved this movie.

good one

After I answered I thought of another one that not a lot of people talk about. North to Alaska.
It also has Capucine. How can you not love it ?
I checked the ratings on "the other site" This movie along with Shepherd and Donovan's Reef are rated about the same.
Not bad, just nothing special. These 3 would be in my top 10 Wayne movies without a doubt.

reply

great film ,but Capucine's story is sad ,as are all suicides ,such as Brian Keith, Rusty Hamer,etc............

reply

Extremely sad. I did a post a while back ago about this very subject.
Not so much suicide but deaths of famous actors before their time.
Some of the stories are gut wrenching. I always thought Veronica Lake's story was heartbreaking.
I think we are now officially off topic. Sorry bout that.

reply

I don't mind 0 untimely deaths bother me ,too.
I it concerns a co-star of John Wayne's ,I do not consider it " off-topic "

reply

We were discussing another actor on another post that lead us to Dick Powell.
Which reminded me of the The Conqueror and all deaths of the people who worked on that movie.
Around 40 percent of the people developed some sort of cancer.

reply

THE CONQUEROR, bar none.

reply

I remember seeing that as a kid with all our neighbors.
It was a light, fun movie, absent all the usual John Wayne stereotype,
and I think it was my first introduction to racial prejudice, I was that young.
I like this one, Circus World and Hatari ... most of the other JW stuff is too
cliche.
