He wasn't so Dumb...he was an Excellent Student and Chess Player.

I have my Liberal biases against him, but he beat the pants off his chess opponents. He Loved to play (Chess) with Rock Hudson. When he asked someone "you know about Rock Hudson?" and they said "He's Homosexual" The Duke responded "who CARES if he's Queer?! He doesn't act the Victim about it! and he plays Good Chess!" He got A's in Chemistry and was not Valedictorian but came close.

He never played dumb characters in his movies--exactly the opposite.

However, you're right--he was one of the top students at his high school, a real scholar. Throughout his life, John Wayne was a very smart, thoughtful guy, and a real gentleman who could discuss any issue with anybody in a mature, civilized manner, and respect their point of view even if he didn't agree. Even leftist, gay activist George Takei liked him.
