Good actor, but too Walt Disney for me.

I'm a liberal, so I also believe in a lot of the same things he did, but he just seemed too good, too Walt Disney. That quote he made about singing in his car almost made me throw up. If there was some kind of defect to him (such as alcoholism) I really would be a bigger fan!

Actually during the filming of ONLY THE VALIANT [1951], Peck had problems sleeping and started taking Seconal and was also drinking too much. Supposedly Peck had drifted into an affair with Barbara Payton.

Peck twice experienced chest pains and was convinced he was dying of a heart attack. Doctors diagnosed nervous anxiety and told him to take a rest. Peck rented a bungalow in the Mojave Desert. There he relaxed, read, sunbathed and took long walks in the desert and finally got some sleep. He did not touch a drop of alcohol. After a month he returned to films.

Peck was far from being a "Walt Disney" type. I think you'd have to be dull, humorless and prudish to be a Disney type. I wouldn't think that those types of people would even be aware of racial prejudice or that their country could be wrong in any way. Peck does not fit into any of this. He was a nice man but he wasn't dull.

There's nothing wrong with being a happy person. If you need somebody to be frail in order to relate to them, then that's on you.

I don't think Greg was in a Disney film

OP, put it this way... Dean Jones wasn't in The Omen with Tommy Kirk and Dick Van Dyke. 

I don't see anything Disney about Greg Peck. Disney (of that era), to me, is:

Dean Jones ("The Love Bug"/Herbie, "The Million Dollar Duck," "The Strongest Man in the World")
Tommy Kirk
Kurt Russell (pre-Escape From New York)
Angela Lansbury ("Bedknobs and Broomsticks")
Julie Andrews
Dick Van Dyke
David Tomlinson ("Mary Poppins," "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," "The Love Bug")
Don Knotts

Nothing wrong with being too good ever. I can't think of good nice actors like Peck these days. The quote about you liking him if he wasn't as good if he maybe had a drinking problem is one of the most stupid things I have heard, never heard of being too good as a criticism ever before.

I remember a similar post years ago that if Bette Davis was a nice person she wouldn't have been a great actress! Barbara Stanwyck was a nice person by all accounts and a whole lot better than Davis.

The OP doesn't realize that Peck was a great actor AND person.

reply

Right, the two aren't mutually exclusive. Don't know why the OP thinks they are.

I prefer Bette to Barbara as an actress, but it has nothing to do with the types of people they were.
