Paul + Joanne on screen.

I`ve seen nearly all the films they appeared together, maybe it`s just me but seems like they didn`t really gel together on screen. Most of the films they did together weren`t that good , it`s a shame they didn`t do better films . The only ones of them together i liked were The Long Hot Summer , From The Terrace and Mr & Mrs Bridge. The last one was the only film they did that either was nominated for an oscar. Joanne was nominated also for Rachael Rachael but Paul directed that not starred in. I think Paul should`ve starred in more films with Elizabeth Taylor, they were so great in Cat on a hot tin roof wished they did do more films together. Same could be said for Liz and Richard not all films they appeared together were that great . Does any one else agree that on screen Paul and Joanne didn`t really gel together?.

I disagree on that for the most part and most married couples don't. him and Liz almost made a 2nd film together two ride the see saw but she was unable to make the movie due to Illness and he had a clause in his contract that meant if they couldn't recast the female opposite him he didn't have to make the movie and got to keep his paycheck. Paul & Joanne got crappy scripts because they knew people would pay to see them together weather they worked well or not. Joanne so should've won the oscar for Mr & Mrs Bridge it would've been alot sweeter than her win for The Three Faces Of Eve was because when that happened they were grieving the loss of their first child

"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

Two for the seesaw ended up being made with Robert Mitchum and Shirley Maclaine if that`s the one you meant. I would`ve liked it there was a sequel to Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, everytime i watched it i wished it continued on. Of course if there was a sequel it would `ve had to have Paul and Liz in it. Some married couples work well together on screen and some don`t , but like you said Paul and Joanne were given crappy scripts and can`t do anything more to have made them better. I think Joanne did deserve to win for the first one whether it was a sympathy win or not, the other nominees that year i have seen but one ,weren`t better than Joanne`s performance. Same for Paul`s win that was really an overdue win ,not so much for the performance he should`ve won for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Comparing Kathy Bates`s win for Misery and Joanne`s Mr and Mrs Bridge i do feel Kathy deserved to win for that.

yes that's the one I Meant.as for the oscars if it didn't matter to them why does it still bother the fans so much. Joanne even famously remarked "It's Only Fun For Five Minutes Until You Get Back To Your Seat and Realize it's only A Satute". lets agree to disagree on that Mr & Mrs Bridge had taken Joanne 20 years to get made and Paul said on more than one ocassion he made it as a gift to her because he knew she was planning to retire from the big screen shortly after because good roles for older women are harder to come by than they are for men

"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

I liked Mr & Mrs Bridge it was nice seeing Paul as a loathsome character. It`s a shame that was i think the 2nd last film she made ,the last one was Philadelphia . I suppose like most don`t want to relagated to only playing mothers or grandmothers all the time. It`s funny about the oscars ,a lot of actors say things like that like they don`t really care much about them when they had won, but be different story if they never won or were nominated. Winnning an oscar to me would be like being knighted or given a royal title, better than being called only a nominee or reminded how many times you were nominated and lost.

@IKPP you hit it right on the head and there are so many deserving actors/actresses who have either never been nominated for an oscar/never won Sir Michael Redgrave Richard Burton Peter O'toole Lynn Redgrave. with Mr & Mrs Bridge that was a passion project for Joanne she had struggled to get it made into a film for 20 years as for Philadelphia I wish she had been nominated for best supporting actress nobody could've played Beckett's mother as beautifully as she did though she had no chance of winning Anna Paquin did for the Piano though the youngest nominee in oscar history was Justin Henry age 8 for Kramer Vs Kramer in 1980 and the youngest in best actress was Keisha Castle Hughes aged 13 for Whale Rider in 2004 though Charlize Theron won for Monster that year

I`ve watched a lot of oscar winning performances and there`s quite a lot i questioned why they won for. But knowing a lot about the politics of them it`s unfair that some win for something they shouldn`t and others who give fine performances all the time get nothing . Like Burton and O`Toole , you can bet if either were american they would`ve won one, and actors who never get nominated at all. Also comes to kind is honorary oscars ,they`re honoring some who really weren`t big stars more bit part stars, really should James Earl Jones or Eli Wallach be honored over Doris Day.
I don`t mind kids being nominatedor winning, i thought Tatum O`Neal`s win was deserving but depending on the other nominees performances was she the best out of that lot. Paquin, i wasn`t happy at the time she won cause i wanted Winona to win but Paquin`s was at least deserving. Justin Henry, i really questioned why he was nominated for , i know he was 7 yrs old but the performance was hardly worth nominating for. Keisha ,i haven`t seen it but know of it but she must`ve been outstanding to be nominated for aleading role.
I think child actors who get nominated ,really should be nominated for giving a performance that you wouldn`t expect from a child that also gives a huge presence in the film. I don`t like them being nominated for basically acting like a child , like Justin and Abigail Breslin were.

you've got to take into account neither of them liked award shows a reminder is Joannes famous Quote "it's only fun for five minutes until you get back to your seat & Realize it's only a statue".

"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

Do you mean Burton and O`Toole?. Katharine Hepburn only ever turned up once and that was in 1974 just to present an honourary oscar to, in yet she was given the oscar 4 times. The Academy seem to reward those who don`t care for the oscars and have never turned up, George C Scott made it clearb how he felt about them and still won , he was nominated again the next year. Marlon Brando was nominated again the next year after he won and refused his oscar. So i don`t think them not liking award shows really turned against them, unfortunately Burton passed awayat 59, maybe he could`ve had another shot at it if he lived longer or even given an honourary one. O`Toole eventually got honoured and was nominated again, now has the unfortunate tag of being most nominated never to have won. Paul could`ve ended up having that unwanted honour too, if the academy hadn`t rewarded hin for The Colour Of Money that wasn`t really his best performanceto have won for.
