He directed really good movies. He is not in all of them. In my opinion he did very good job. These are the ones he directed. The Glass Menagerie, Harry and Son, The Effect of Gamma Rays On Man In The Moon Marigolds, Rachael Rachael,  Sometimes A Great Notion.

the hustler, cat on a hot tin roof, cool hand luke, and butch cassidy and the sundance kid are my favorites.

Absence of Malice (1981) is a good Paul Newman movie, too.
If you want something else, early, try Somebody Up there Likes Me (1956).
