How many Oscars should Hitch have won?

Which Best Director Oscars should Hitch have won? How many times was he snubbed? I know that some of his films were not received well by critics and audiences at the time of their release. However, generations down the road, I think it's obvious he should have won a few...

In my opinion... 6.

1940 - For Rebecca. An odd choice by the Academy - the oscar went to John Ford for The Grapes of Wrath, while Rebecca actually won for Best Picture. It should have been reversed.

1946 - For Notorious. Best Years of Our Lives (Best Picture) and Wonderful Life are the most remembered and probably the best films of that year. But the techniques used in directing Notorious could not have been done better by any other director. Hitch should have won Best Director. The Oscar went to William Wyler.

1954 - For Rear Window. I have no problem with Waterfront winning Best Picture, but Rear Window was a much more challenging film to direct. The Oscar went to Elia Kazan.

1958 - For Vertigo. Some might argue for Orson Welles for Touch of Evil, but I think Hitch triumphs here. The Oscar went to Vincente Minnelli for Gigi

1960 - For Psycho. The Oscar went to Billy Wilder for The Apartment.

1963 - For The Birds. There really wasn't much competition that year. Hitch should have won.

You could also argue that he should have won for Shadow of a Doubt in 1943, and for North by Northwest in 1959. However, in 1959, Hitch was up against Billy Wilder who did a superb direction job for Some Like It Hot. The Oscar actually went to William Wyler for Ben-Hur in 1959.

I haven't seen The Apartment (I need to watch some more Billy Wilder films sometime), but he should have probably won for Psycho (at least for all the efforts he made to even make the movie).

He should have probably won for Vertigo aswell. It's really skillfully directed(I have never even heard of "Gigi").

Rebecca is perhaps his best directed movie (only seen 15). So I guess he could have won for that too (though not seen Grapes of Wrath).

This ought to be a joke. There was 8 1/2 that year.... The Birds is no competition to 8 1/2. The Birds is not really good in my opinion. It's decent but nothing I'd watch again and easily the worst Hitch I've watched so far.

You see things; and you say Why? But I dream things that never were and I say Why not?

The Apartment is a terrific film, but I still think Hitchcock should have won Best Director for Psycho.

He definitely should have won for Vertigo. Gigi is a musical from Vincente Minnelli (father of Liza), who earlier in the decade directed An American in Paris which won Best Picture. Both films starred Leslie Caron.

While Rebecca did win Best Picture, Hitchcock lost to John Ford for The Grapes of Wrath. I think The Grapes of Wrath is a great film, but I still think Hitchcock should have won. John Ford would win Best Director the next year with How Green Was My Valley, which also won Best Picture over Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcon, and Sergeant York.

As much as I respect John Ford films, he probably shouldn't have won for either of those films. Welles clearly should have won for directing Kane. And Welles should have won Best Actor instead of Gary Cooper.

The one film John Ford should have won an oscar for was The Searchers in 1956. That film got no recognition at all, and is arguably the greatest western ever made.

I agree with just about everything you've said. How Green Was My Valley is just not on the same level as Citizen Kane. It's more of an anthology film. While it's a good movie, it was definitely not the best picture of 1941.

I think The Searchers just might be John Ford's best. It should have won Best Picture that year, though it wasn't nominated. The actual winner was Around the World in Eighty Days, which is one of the weaker Best Picture winners. It doesn't hold up that well, though it's fun to see all of the classic cameos of that period of entertainment.

Thanks for the reply.

Grapes of Wrath was probably the best film from 1940. But as you said, Rebecca just might be Hitch's best directed film. So I agree; the Oscar for direction should have gone to Hitch that year, as Rebecca was a better directed film.

Well I completely forgot that 8 1/2 came out that year, so I apologize. However, with regards to the Oscars, I don't think this ought to be a joke. Do you really think that the Academy would ever grant a foreign film Best Picture or Best Director? Especially back in 1963? 8 1/2 had no chance because of that, and really should not be included when talking about the 1963 Oscars. To my knowledge the Academy has never awarded a foreign film Best Picture or Best Director. However, there is more of a chance of that happening today than back in 1963. A film that doesn't have at least a small production by an American studio never has, and probably, never will win Best Picture or Best Director. In 2000, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon clearly should have won those awards, in my opinion. But it being a foreign film pretty much killed it's chances. Gladiator and Traffic took the two big awards that year.

That's just the way the Academy works, unfortunately.

The Birds seems to be the most praised American film by critics from 1963, and that's something I happen to agree with. Name me one American film from 1963 that is better. And Please don't say Tom Jones. :)

The problem with The Searchers is that black hole that is John Wayne. For me, at least, the film stops dead whenever he is on the screen. Ford deserved his Oscar for The Grapes of Wrath, his best film, as well as for The Informer. As for Hitchcock I think he should have won fot The Lady Vanishes, Vertigo, and Psycho.
