I was surprised to learn he was English because he doesn't have one of those posh English accent that some of his peers had, like Laurence Olivier and Julie Andrews.

I always think he has the very definition of a mid-Atlantic accent. But it's very different from the Bristol accent he grew up with - though I've never heard him speak in any other way than you hear in the films.

He was from Bristol, a place with a very distinct accent. He worked to get rid of it by affecting a mid-Atlantic accent.

John Mahoney from Frasier did the exact same thing.
