Comparing people to Dean

It seems like every time a new actor comes around who plays a brooding character in a film they are automatically compared to James Dean…why?

It’s almost as if people are just throwing the comparison out there without really even thinking about it. Which, to me, is a big problem. Case in point: Robert Pattinson.

Robert Pattinson went on “The View” and Barbara Walters compared him to James Dean in reference to his performance in the movie “Remember Me.” Granted, Pattinson can’t help what someone else decides to compare him to, but I thought for Walters to make such a statement was pretty thoughtless.

James Dean was almost like a force of nature, he came and made a huge impact and was gone before anyone knew what hit them. How is this like Robert Pattinson? James Dean made his impression in just three movies. Three! Not to mention the fact he was nominated for Academy Awards for two of them.

Simply playing a character who broods, or pouts or whatever you want to say does not equate into being the “next” James Dean or being like James Dean, whatever. Simply put, there was only one James Dean. Although it is a flattering comment considering how great James Dean was, it just makes whoever pays the compliment look stupid by not understanding Dean’s impact while also making whoever receives the compliment look stupid for obviously not being able to live up to a legend.

Pretty sure Walters reference was the characters were both disturbed and wanting attention from their families in a similar way.

Pattinson was a great actor in Remember Me - it's the only film of his so far that I have enjoyed.

But I the two actors or Dean and Pattinson are incomparable.

The characters or Jim and ...Pattinson's characters had some similarities.

I didn;t take it as Pattinson is the new Dean at all.

I was always under the impression that people are always comparing Ledger to Dean with the whole dying young thing. IMO Ledger was a bit overrated and probably wont be remembered as well as Dean was. (Though because I live in Australia and he obviously is an Australian Actor, he might get hyped up here more)

Neither him nor Pattison are the modern day James Dean I agree.
Pattinson has probably tarnised his reputation a bit by being in the Twilight Movies but with a decent role he can do good as proven in Remember Me.

Anyway I think the comparing people to the past is always a debatable thing and no thing is certain. I think its just bought up so people debate about it. I personally dont buy many.

People very often compare new young stars to older icons. She's the new Audrey Hepburn. Brings to mind a young Marlon Brando. This generations Meryl Streep etc etc. I think it's usually to describe the kind of appeal the new/young actor is believed to have. And sometimes the type of image the management and studios would like to brand said star with.

With regards James Dean and Robert Pattinson. I would say there is a small similarity there in their looks. BUT the comparison is not wholly incorrect when you compare Deans performance in Giant and Pattinson's in Remember Me. Having just recently seen it[Giant] I was quite struck by that. It's clear Pattinson found inspiration in that performance or maybe in Dean's acting style in general. I'm NOT saying that he in any way deserves that comparison. It's early days in his career and though he has made a huge impact with The Twilight Saga, until that hoopla dies down it will difficult to see where his career goes. I definitely think he's a talented young man.

I think people are always comparing new actors to James Dean BECAUSE James Dean died young. No one could get enough of him, so people are always looking for new stars to either fill his shows or continue his legacy. In that sense, it's more of a compliment to Dean than to whoever he's being compared to.

In the late 1950s an early 1960s a lot of new actor blatantly mimicked Dean's mannerism and played up what ever similarity in appearance there was to him. The audiences resented these attempts rather than welcomed them. One critic commented this was a sure way to ruin a career. Even Steve McQueen did it in The Blob. Luckily for him his wife (Neile Adams) royally chewed him out about it and told him to express his own persona.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but from what I've seen from James Dean he could reveal more in the slightest change in facial expression than Robert Pattinson could do with his whole body. Dean was incredibly gifted. Pattinson will be seen for what he is in time.

I think with Robert Pattinson it's just the hair, and that he plays a brooding, mysterious vampire. But that's about it. Back in the 1990s, people compared Luke Perry from Beverly Hills 90210 to James Dean. There's always some guy that they are comparing to James Dean.
