I often think about the movies he would have made

Would have been Paul Newman before Paul Newman.

Indeed, he died way too young. If only....

reply

If only he’d learned how to drive a Porsche Spyder.

Or how to buy a car that suited him.

reply

His driving was fine. The other driver was at fault.

My point refers to the arrogant comparison with Paul Newman. Newman was a competitive racing driver, respected by international racing drivers. He competed as “PL Newman.” He was the “Newman” in the Newman/Hass championship-winning Indycar team. Paul Newman would have survived the incident that killed a rich punk driving an oversteer-prone car that he bought because he could afford it.

I’m curious how you think you know anything at all about Dean’s skill behind the wheel, and can call it “fine.” I, on the other hand, know for a fact that Paul Newman was a trained, skilled and respected international racing driver.

reply

Yes indeed.

James Dean would have made a lot more movies had he not been so reckless in his sports car. We lost him way too early. Sad.

I wonder what kind of an actor he would have matured into.

Actually, I wonder if he would have matured into an actor at all, because he still would gave been young when the Sixties hit! He might have liked sex and drugs and rock, and protests and being anti-establishment and chucking his career to live in a yurt or a commune or something. Dean hated Hlywood life, he might have gone for an alternative lifestyle when it came into fashion.
