Favourite Olivia de Havilland movies

R.I.P. Olivia, the last true superstar of 1930s and 40s Hollywood. It’s startling to think that an actress who, as a young adult, appeared in two Best Picture nominees of 1935 was, until yesterday, still among us.

Of her many movies my favourite five are:

Captain Blood
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Gone with the Wind
The Heiress
The Strawberry Blonde - a lovely, underrated performance opposite James Cagney

... with very honourable mentions to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, In This Our Life and - perhaps her greatest performance, if inevitably dated - The Snake Pit.

What are everybody’s favourite Olivia roles and films?

I know her name much better than her films. I don't think GWTW showcased her well enough to evaluate her from that alone. I'd love to see more but don't know when this will happen.

btw, thanks for getting her last name right.

reply

True, she wasn't the lead in GWTW. My favorite is The Heiress for which she won her 2nd Oscar, and Light in the Piazza where she plays the mother of Yvette Mimieux.

Gone With the Wind
The Heiress
The Snake Pit
The Adventures of Robin Hood
My Cousin Rachel
Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte

I'd love to finally see To Each His Own btw, but it is difficult to get on either dvd or blu-ray. I have ordered the Spanish blu-ray today: very much looking forward to getting that.

I watched To Each His Own yesterday in tribute. It’s a good film but not one of her best imo. She is good in the flashback sequences, better as a middle-aged spinster in the bookend sections but it’s not as impressive as her other Oscar-winning performance, or several for which she didn’t win/wasn’t nominated. Definitely worth tracking down and seeing once, though.
