Is it the smoking that really did a number on her face?

I am watching Harper (and trying to stay awake for the whole thing). I would have guessed she was 55+ in this movie. Not the 41-12 her IMDB DOB would seem to suggest.

It's hard to believe Paul Newman was just a year younger than Bacall. He looked more like her boytoy in the movie. Smoking really did it to her. Look at what it did to that Bette Davis. In contrast, Joan Crawford, who was my dear friend, smoked but she never needed to use cigarettes to look "cool" like Bacall did or as an acting crutch like Davis did. All dear Joan needed was her beauty, talent and charisma. That's what you call a real star.

Don't worry, I ain't on the side of saints yet.

I don't know if it was smoking or drinking or what, but to me Bacall did not age well. While she was stunning in her 20s in all her movies with Bogie, by her early 30s she was already looking old. Just hard edged. Maybe part of it was that she filmed better in black and white too. I don't think she comes off as well in her color pictures.

But by age 29, she is starting to look really harsh, like in “How to Marry a Millionaire.” I don’t think color did her any favors, she looked much better in black and white.

Interesting.
