S1: Chapter 7 (contains spoilers, obviously)

I am more confused than ever.
But I really liked the silent movie scenes with the captions. That and the animated chalkboard drawings. I love how they use so many different styles and techniques in this show.

I kind of understand how they finally got out of the hospital dream and stopped the bullets.
BUT, wasn't the whole scene with them in David's childhood home also a dream? There was a tree in the middle of the room. I thought they all astral-traveled there and their bodies were still someplace else.
What was Oliver's trick with conducting music and bubbles and how did that affect the bullet-time reality? I thought that Cary putting the halo on David's body is what snapped him out of the trance and let him catch the bullets, so in that case, what was the purpose and effect from what Oliver was doing?
And is Oliver back now, for real, in the flesh?
Why did he not recognize his wife?
What was the deal with the blood dripping up to the ceiling?
And I don't know who that one guy was.
Who was the guy with the knife in his chest/wheelchair/stretcher?

reply

Great questions popcorn, but you might want to put a spoiler alert in your title. Some people have not seen the episode yet.

I'm sure someone will be able to provide the answers. Meanwhile, I believe the guy with the knife in his chest was Rudy. He's the drool guy.

😎

reply

ok I will add it. Even though none of the other threads for each episode has a warning and they were all posted the same night as those episodes aired.
I don't know why anyone would open a thread about a certain episode without watching the episode first.

Was Rudy one of the Summerland people? Why would they bring his body back to Summerland if he wasn't one of them.

reply

I agree that it doesn't make sense to open a thread before watching an episode. However, after one of the other episodes I heard from someone from Europe who had not seen it yet.

Yes, Rudy was one of the Summerland people, a mutant actually. He's the one who tackled Lenny in the corridor
I believe.

reply

I somehow never noticed Rudy before and did not see him with their group in the childhood bedroom bullet scene.
His real life physical body was with them when they came back to summerland so I assume he had to have been with them in the bedroom (which I thought was also astral/imaginary, but now I guess it was supposed to be physically real?)
How did his real life body get injured if he was only stabbed in the imaginary hospital?

reply

I believe he was stabbed by The Eye, and then The Eye assumed Rudy's form and turned the machine gun on David.

Thanks

You're welcome. 😎

reply

@Popcorn Kernel I think I might be the person from Europe. No need for spoiler warnings for an episode thread. I think those are pretty much a given ;)

@MovieManCin2 Thanks for the consideration anyway :)

I believe Rudy (didn't know that was his name) is the one with telekinetic powers, who kept telekinetically throwing rocks at D3 in one of the earlier episodes, when they were all running away from D3 to the boat. He is also the one drooling in the mental hospital. He is often present in the background. We just don't know much about him.

reply

You are correct, Apis!

😎

reply

I missed him altogether in the hospital. And when they showed him in the closet, stabed, I was like "Aaah, it's that guy, that made all those people fly in the first episode."

reply

This was a cool one. 'They Live' glasses, Bolero, Silent Movie segment. They're really having fun with this.

If we were in reality to begin with, I think David's house was in some sort of altered reality, not the astral plane. Maybe that's why the blood what dripping upwards? Sort of to show that the laws of physics were all screwed up. But I'm still not sure if we've entered reality proper, but gone to another fake reality instead. Or that we're still somehow in the astral plane? Them getting from David's house to Summerland was a bit abrupt. And Oliver looked pretty good for someone who's been on ice for 20 years. In fact, he looked exactly like he did in the astral plane. It all seemed too... idyllic to be true. And David, again, seemed a bit uncharacteristically sure of himself. But then D3 showed up, so we just might be in reality.

Cary putting the halo on prevents Lenny from controlling David. And once David got full control he was able to catch the bullets. But I have no idea what Oliver was doing. Creating some sort of barrier between Syd and David, and the bullets maybe? I don't think it had much of an effect. Didn't Lenny stop him when she threw him against the wall?

Lenny got boxed in. Yay, I predicted something... I think lol. But it doesn't seem like she'll be locked away for long. Would David using his power to fight D3 release her? Is she necessary for him to use his powers to hurt people?

I don't get why The Eye was in the astral. What was his purpose there? What was Lenny using him for? And how come when she made him into a human paper ball in the astral, the same thing happened to him in "reality"?

And also, in the beggining of the episode, are those James McAvoy's eyes we see in the flashes?

reply

Amen. I think your observations are spot on. As to your questions, I'm not really sure. I will have to check out some more analysis videos on You Tube, but WOW is this ride ever FUN!

PS In a You Tube analysis of episode 7 (see my post below) the guys did a freeze frame, and you can see the word SHIELD between the bullets and David and Syd. He was creating a shield for them before he was so rudely interrupted by Lenny/Shadow King.

reply

"'They Live' glasses"

True! I haven't thought of that until you mentioned it.

This part of conversation between David and his rational mind got me laughing:
"I'm your rational mind. You created me."
"And you're british?"
"Like I said, I'm your rational mind" 😄

reply

As an American I loved that line!

😎

reply

"And you're british?" That made me laught as well. The whole interaction between David and himself was fun.

reply

Mina,
If you want an excellent analysis, check out the You Tube video by GameSpot Universe. The two guys are really smart, and unlike some analysts they actually show video from the show. In the comment section Mackenzie Gray (The Eye) congratulated them on "another excellent analysis". Check it out.

PS There's another excellent You Tube video analysis by Nerdgasm.

reply

Thanks for the explanation of what Oliver was doing and for the suggestions MovieMan! I'll keep those analysis...es? in mind. After the season's over I plan a binge and I'll check those out after that. Untill then, I like stumbling in the dark. For me, it's half the fun :)

reply

I usually watch the episode, then form my opinion and write my thoughts here. Yes, it's half the fun, even if I get it all wrong.

But later I do watch explanatory youtube videos because they are very useful. For instance, someone noticed that the letters Oliver was putting between bullets and Syd/David formed a word "s h i e l d". I would've never noticed that by myself.

reply

It's definately a personal preference for me. And it increases my enjoyment on a repeated viewing, when I can discover things I didn't notice before. But it makes for a lot of stupid theories lol

reply

You're welcome, Mina. I like stumbling in the dark during the episode, and then watching the analyses later.

Very entertaining indeed.

Where's my dear fellow, DreamersxDisease?

I like to read you after watching the chapter, man.

Yes!

Hey guys, I was kinda taking some time off till this place died down a little. I appreciate the interest though & have been reading your observations!

reply

Meant to also include that I hope to be back for the finale, but I'll just have to see how I feel and see what the site is up to. It has been a lot of fun discussing this show with you all though and I also appreciate you guys asking after me.

I'll attempt to ease back into all this....
Stay awesome and just repeat to yourselves; "I am pretty. I am loved." 😉

reply

Taking time off till this place died down a little?

Hope you don't think the forum is tired of your excellent contributions Dreamers. If you feel it's all a bit much you can also shorten the posts down from full length novellas till short essays :)

No seriously, I think all here really appreciate your eloquent positive and thoughtful texts.

reply

Good to hear from you again Dreamers, and welcome back!

I second that motion. Mahrez is right. We all enjoy your intelligent posts even if they are a bit long.

😎

reply

Nice timing, I was just checking in again!
By, "died down," I meant for all the drama that's been happening here lately. I just was worried for the site and didn't want to fall prey to any of it.

It had nothing to do with any of you guys or this board. I love this board and am so happy it's full of robust discussion from all of you! And yes, I am guilty of novella writing, diatribes, and otherwise incessant mind dumps on this show, lol...oopsie! But thank you for your kind words about said mind dumps, it's really great to get my thoughts out and have them be embraced and given right back to me.

Seeing as I'm not good about NOT talking about this show, I'm sure I'll be back in full form soon enough (hell this is the most I've posted in almost a week). It's been hard not delving into the latest one with you all, I was just hoping things would quiet down elsewhere, but if not...I'm more than happy with this little (but awesome) corner of it.

EDIT: Again, I am long-winded, lol...certainly no one needs to feel obligated to read all of my blabbing! Feel free to ignore as you will 😉 Apologies for the dissertations!

reply

By "drama", do you mean the trolling going on, or? I think gen discussion and elsewhere looks much much calmer since that first mod showed up and ignore button was made. I have put like three posters on ignore and haven't seen any drama or very annoying troll posts for some days now :)

reply

Yes, and just all the blow back and freak out that followed. It just kind of turned me off, to be honest. I had been posting far too much anyways, so I figured a scale back was a good idea regardless.

But screw it, I enjoy this show too much and talking with you guys (especially with the finale upon us) that I'd like to keep contributing to this board. I hope to respond to some of the discussions going on above and other threads tomorrow...if I'm not too late to the party that is...haha. So, maybe see ya then?

I'll work on shortening my replies while I'm at it, lol

reply

Dreamers! I've missed you and am glad to see you back here. Even though I don't watch this show and only ended up on this thread thanks to a combination of the Trending section and curiosity.

Anyhow, no more need be said, except I'm glad you haven't permanently fled due to The Drama & So Forth.

reply

Aw, thank you Catbookss! That's really nice of you to drop in like this, I really appreciate it! I'm glad to see you kicking around here still and fighting the good fight. I hope we keep bumping into each other 😉

p.s. you should check the show out, it's WILD.

reply

I'm sure we'll keep bumping into one another, Dreamers :)

I'll see if I can catch the show. Sounds interesting!

reply

This is a late reply, but I figured I'd give a go at your questions!

- David's room was on the astral plane. I forget or am not sure where their actual bodies where. Back at Summerland still? But that's why the light was emanating from him when they all finally came to in that room, he was transporting them back to reality.

- Oliver was creating a shield around David and Syd to keep them from the impact of the bullets. I think Oliver was buying them time and creating a distraction so Cary could get that device on his head and so they could continue rescuing everyone from Lenny in the Clockworks scenario.

- It does seem like Oliver is back, in the flesh. Seems awfully easy though so I'm not sure I trust that entirely. Why hadn't he tried it before? Did he suddenly have a purpose? I don't get the reasoning behind all of that. He got kicked out of the astral plane by Lenny so maybe that thrust him into reality by accident. I'm going with that.

- I don't know why he doesn't recognize Melanie. I assume there has to be something to that. He seems to remember a lot of other stuff, even if its jumbled. By why can he remember an affair he had once, but not the woman he was married to for years? There is something definitely off there.

- The blood dripping is in conjunction with your last question. It was coming from Rudy who was stabbed by The Eye right as they were being sucked into the Lenny-created reality at Clockworks. He wasn't quite dead, he was in the midst of it and so when time stopped so did his dying, as I understood it. I can't be sure, but I think Melanie just whispered their plan to him and what was going on and to go and attack/get Lenny out of the way for them to be able to get back to the room in time.

That's how I saw it anyways!

reply

But if the room was in the astral plane, the bullets were astral bullets and wouldn't have hurt them anyway since their bodies were somewhere else. How did Rudy getting stabbed in the astral plane injure his real body? And they were carrying his real body back on a stretcher.
And getting the halo onto David's head... if the room was in the astral plane, than astral Cary was only putting an astral halo on astral David's astral head. It wasn't putting an actual device on his physical head.
And if the room was astral, then how were they all coming back to summerland together, when their actual bodies were in all different locations? Maybe them coming back to summerland was still astral? And that is why Oliver is with them, because they still aren't back in actual physical reality yet?

reply

Technically, it could all be astral if we went that way with it. That could, potentially explain everything you're asking about. Assuming that's not the case though, I'll offer....

We have never been told that being hurt in the astral couldn't affect you or kill you still have we? There's no reason to assume other than what we've seen in other popular culture, perhaps, that those bullets still couldn't have done some damage. I have to keep reminding myself this is all in the mind and that's where the implications lie and not with their actual bodies. I assumed that if the bullets hit Syd she might die in the astral plane and while that maybe wouldn't have transferred to her physical being it would've kept her in that astral plane, in that room forever, essentially making her a vegetable. That's the real word consequences of that one. I'd say the same applied to all of them, that's why they were on a rescue mission, so they wouldn't be trapped there for well, eternity, possibly. Or, like you said, Rudy was still injured so maybe it does transfer and those bullets would've killed her full stop. We don't know the rules of the astral plane and if change based on who's in it.

Cary's device was made for David's mind and not his actual head so it makes sense to me that it'd work there since a lot of what was going on was his doing (albeit through DYE as well). I also don't know about the last part of your question with their bodies. Do we know where they all were when they got sucked into the astral plane? Anyways, I don't think it mattered cause they were all together in that astral room and David's power allowed him to group them altogether and transport them to the forest. I think you just have to go with that being a part of his abilities.

The Oliver thing is peculiar, to be sure. Either DYE tossing him across the room threw him completely out of the astral plane and that's why he's there...or maybe it goes back to your last, and my first, points of it all being astral or another plane of reality of some sort. Who knows! Which isn't a very confident way to end this message, lol....

reply

Okay...so I'm rewatching it right now and I'm as confused as you are about what is and isn't the astral plane. I thought for sure his room was, but that scene between Oliver and Cary strongly suggests otherwise. Oliver says that's where their bodies are and Cary says, "real David," referring to the one in the room and calls it, "the now frozen timeline."

So...all of that indicates that the room isn't an astral plane, but actual reality. I guess we just have to take Melanie's warning that it may be his mind they were walking into as just being wrong. That they didn't explain that or clarify it seems like a real misstep because it was a bit of unnecessary confusion, in my opinion.

Both Syd and David allude to their actual bodies being in his room, too, so I guess that's that. I'm docking myself -10 points for lack of critical hearing and paying attention, haha!

reply

Ok if we are now meant to believe that the childhood bedroom was real physical reality, it seems like they did a lot of things to make it seem UNreal. Like the tree growing in the room. I think we have to expect a lot of red herrings and bait-and-switch from this show. it's real- no it's not- oh wait, yeah it is...
I still enjoy it, but I just don't really know what I can trust.

reply

That's the trick with ambiguity...too much of it and it just doesn't work. We can't be unsure about every single element or we'll be lost, or like you said, not know what to trust. That's something that's fun for a bit and keeps us on our toes, but it's not sustainable, in my opinion.

Not to say they have to rid of that facet of the show completely, not at all. It's a part of the fabric of it really, but in this particular instance it muddied it up for no reason. They give Melanie a line like that and just let it play out, and I respect wanting to do that, but it didn't settle well for me...or I wasn't paying enough attention.

reply

The tree growing inside the room has gotta be a proof that this is not reality.

Another proof is that Oliver is there... but this can't be cause we know that he is in the diver suit in the basement. And then at one point Lenny/Shadow King throws Oliver into the wall, he falls on the ground and disappears (from that reality). If this was a reality, Oliver wouldn't have simply disappeared into thin air, right?

reply

All valid points. I think it's still really unclear. The characters on the show certainly seem to have thought that was real life, but maybe they just don't realize that it's not? Maybe we should take this as a clue that it's all been on the astral plane or within David's mind or something.

What made Melanie think the house was the astral plane? When did she stop thinking that? When did they all stop thinking that? All the weird things that went down at that house, was it just David's powers and DYE manipulation? I find it hard to believe it wasn't apart of the plane too, I think we were led to believe that it was, again by Melanie's word, why else include that? And then they kind of pulled the rug out from that.

I don't know, I don't get their approach to that, but maybe it'll become clearer in the finale, but for all the shows deft ambiguity and time playfulness, for whatever reason, I find this one to just be cheap? Or sloppy? Or something like that, still love it though! hah

reply

I re-watched that scene (for the 3rd time) and now I'm thinking that maybe it can be logically explained, if we presume that astral bullets can do damage to astral bodies. I can't imagine what kind of damage though.

In the end of the scene David raises his hands and teleports the group into the woods. Maybe what he did was both teleport them, and take them from astral to normal plane, both at once.

I can't think of anything else without getting a headache. 😞

reply

I thought it was him transporting them out of the astral plane too. I had believed it was the plane ever since Melanie mentioned they might be in his world now...I may be sticking to that moment too much, but dammit, that was the kick off to make more people assume that I'd guess.

Like someone else pointed out (or maybe it was you) Rudy's injury carried over into the forest so either it was real life or your injuries in the plane can physically manifest in the real world too in which case Syd would've been fully toast. We also never saw DYE have that much control (being able to insert herself in the room and fling Oliver into the wall) in reality before now either, unless it was through David have we? That's another weird, red flag. If they could do that...why not always do it, ya know? Unless it was a special case with Oliver being a long time dweller of the plane himself.

Yeah...starting to feel that headache now, lol

reply

Darn, I forgot that Rudy's injury carried over to the forest.

Well... back to square one, I guess (and taking a lot of aspirin) 😋

You lucky ducks! I still have one full rotation of the Earth left to wait. It's like counting the minutes until the work day is over (pure agony) :D

Aw, man, sorry for rubbing that in. I always forget how fickle the whole time zones thing is...we're all in that agonizing wait together for now though, ugh!
