how many "red herrings" are there? (SPOILERS)

The two red herrings that immediately come to mind are (1) asking the daughter to get all the way into the oven and (2) the old lady getting the big knife at night when she discovers the camera. In each case the audience is led to think something bad will happen but nothing does.

Any others?

the kid rapping..... oh my goodness, the rapping!!!

"-You're doing great, Luke, if your goal is to suck!"

reply

That isn't a "red herring."

it was for me, I thought they were going to kill him to shut him up!

If they wouldn't, I would! 😀

Agreed. And we were constantly given red herrings to the truth of the 'mystery' too. Thought they were aliens for a while lol. Knowing M. Night I'm surprised they weren't..!

That's not a red herring. It indicated she was dangerous, and she was. The oven scene is her *beep* the kids, but the knife part - I'm pretty sure she'd kill them if she got into the room

The shed with diapers? Not sure if it counts, but I thought at first the boy would find something important there.
The well? I think the old man says something briefly about the well in the end (something something "the well is the only way out"), but I didn't quite catch why the old lady was staring down the well. I thought the kids would find something there.
The night when the old lady picked a knife and was scratching at the door, the angle when they show the kids in the bedroom and the fact the kids don't turn the lights on, I thought the old lady opened the door lock with the knife and was in the room and it was going to be a jump scare.

The well was the portal to the other planet. Where the old woman sent her own kids (drowned them in a suitcase.)

I agree about the oven part. I thought it was going to lead to a twist that the grandma is some kind of "real" witch who tries to cook the kids in the oven like the Grimm fairy tale.

I also though the fake grandpa's description of the beast that was at his factory would end up being something real.

reply

I thought the mold in the basement was making the grandparents act crazy.

Nana constantly cooking and feeding them!? With the oven part. Total red herring. I thought for sure, something was going on with the food. Becca craving the cookies at night? Unless it wasn't a red herring but foreshadowing to the part Nana this to eat her face at the end.
