Caliban

Great character. Shows they can do characters right if they take their time

reply

Yeah. I really liked him too. I wish they could have saved him

reply

I was pleasantly surprised by his character myself. Well-written and well-acted.

reply

Yeah, I like Steven Merchant and glad he got a role in this.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here-https://youtu.be/sgSF7ho3cc4

Kind of surprising to see them
introduce and then kill off the character in the same film.
Doesn't he have a larger role that spans many comics?

reply

He was never a big character and the movie does not stay true to any comics in any way whatsoever. It takes ideas from numerous storylines. Old man Logan comic series is nothing like this movie. It featured hawkeye and the hulk. X-23 was a completely different series. Still. Very well done movie. All I meant was that the character of caliban was well drawn out for any movie standard not necessarily that he mimicked the comics. This movie is Shakespeare compared to the last fantastic four movie.

reply

Well, he was also in Apocalypse, but his personality was much different, and a different actor played him.

reply

That was an example of a movie with badly drawn characters. Nothing memorable about any of the characters introduced in that film. The difference in professionalism between nightcrawler in x2 and DOFP is amazing. The rehash of quicksilver was the lone standout moment. And it was a rehash

I've been told to avoid Apocalypse. I don't think I've heard anyone liking it. Words I've heard used are "messy" and "boring", and it sounds like a huge drop in quality from DoFP. The impressions I gather remind me of Spider-Man 3's own chaotic messiness, but far less fun to watch.

Benjobuff, thank you for the explanations of the comic characters and their differences in the films. It does seem like they play it very loose with the comic sources, if that's the case. This is the first Caliban I've seen on film and I did find him interesting.

reply

I didn't think it was that bad. It definitely had it's flaws, but I've seen far worse (like Spider-Man). If you like X-Men, I'd say it's worth a shot, but don't get your hopes up too high.

In Apocalypse, Caliban talked in third person (i.e. "Caliban doesn't know you") and ran a shady underground business, which I'm still not entirely sure what its function was.

lol, I don't think Bryan Singer knows either. And Caliban sounds like even more of an oddball hah.

I guess I'll check Apocalypse out if it's playing on cable.

reply

Caliban definitely was an oddball, lol. I think I actually did like him better in Apocalypse, partly because most characters who speak in third person are pretty cool even if solely for that reason, but Caliban in Logan was great for different reasons. He did have a much smaller role in Apocalypse, however.
