Is it possible the days of the R rated action movie are coming back? A couple years ago we had John Wick, then Deadpool and last years The Accountant. Now this is coming out, to be followed by John Wick 2 and an R rated wolverine movie. This doesn't look like a masterpiece by any means but it's R rated and looks to have a plot just thin enough for the protagonist to kill a bunch of people. Sounds like the 80s to me
shareWe usually get a few R-rated action movies every year so this isn't indicating a developing trend or anything. Last year, we also had Blood Father and Triple 9 to satisfy the old-school R-rated action itch.
Logan's going to be R rated? That's news to me.
But back to the subject at hand, I don't see it as a trend. The Expendables tried to jump start the the return of the R rated action flick, though successful, it never fully caught on and it seems that with the success of Deadpool, studios will still reach for that quick and easy buck.
Personally, I'd rather see a Sleepless over a Captain America or Doctor Strange any day because fatigue has set in for me and I can only hope for the days of real action flicks not catering to the younger demo because the comic book movie has replaced the action film as we see it and we'd be lucky to even to get an effort from a major studio to even consider greenlighting an R rated action flick.
