Would be cool if it was shot in the visual style of the Revenant.

Less "art house" in tone, but that visually brutal in WW1 and the Amazon.

reply

Speaking under correction, as I have not seen the "Revenant", but I don't think this is an "art house" style film at all.....

I don't think Gray is as adventurous in terms of visual language as Inarritu. He seems to be an unabashed traditionalist with influences like Lean, Coppola, etc. The film looks to have a grand scope, but visually, I don't know...for a period epic like this, someone like Baz Luhrmann or Peter Jackson might've been interesting, but Gray may be more shrewd in terms of narrative focus.

reply

His visual language was pretty good in The Immigrant. I totally disagree about Luhrmann. He killed Australia, it was horrifically bad. Peter Jackson, I don't know. I think he focuses too much on the look of a film and not character depth.

I'm a fan of Gray's attention to detail and authenticity. These images look impressive to me:

They look very good. If only the first two were a lot bigger haha. And holy crap, it would be awesome for a film set in the Amazon to be filmed in the manner of The Revenant. Equally epic location, and at least as visually resplendent.

I think you're not giving enough credit to the DP.

So far this film has given me an impression of Werner Herzog's films Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo in terms of both, narrative and visual style.

reply

The Revenant had a $135 million + budget and they shot with natural light only... no way is that going to be the case for this film, alas.

Yea it would have been something else to see the Amazon in natural light. Maybe next time.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

Terrence Malik should have directed this, with Lubezki as the cinematographer

so many movies, so little time

reply

Lubezki is just using the same style of cinematography he learnt from Malik. The Thin Red Line for example, before Lubezki was shooting for him. As soon as he hired Lubezki to shoot The New World, Lubezki's style changed.

reply

The cinematography in this looks amazing. I did not like the digi look of the revenant nor the camera work.
