Quentin's Coffee

In the scene where they're at Quentin's house, and they drink his coffee, do they comment on how good it is because that was a time before we had all these gourmet coffees? I could be wrong, but during the early 90's, they only had coffee like Folger's, Yuban, etc. that could be made with home coffee pots. I don't think they had Starbucks or Pete's, etc coffee that could be purchased for home use (at that time). But I could be wrong.

Anyway, maybe this is a time in movie history when the 'better' types of coffee were becoming more available for home-brewed coffee...

Starbucks is not gourmet coffee.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

It was gourmet before gourmet coffee existed.

Doesn't he say that his wife buys sh*t coffee from the 'supermarket' implying that he somehow maybe has a coffee hook-up? I'm thinking he just knows some Colombian dude that brings him some decent beans while all the others drink the generic crap.

Juan Valdez ... a real person by the way

real enough I guess

I think you might be overthinking it. Don't forget, Tarantino's movies are set in the real world, but are just fantasies. He even invents brands that don't exist. So it is only possible that in Tarantino's universe there was a lot of sorts of home cofee pots.

reply

I think even back then they could buy beans and brew their own. I always imagined he had a press and everything at home.

reply

Lol. Yes, plenty of people bought whole coffee bean and used a press/grinder.

reply

I think you're wrong. I believe there were already gourmet coffees, like Italian brands, in the 80s and 90s. Even the 70s, I think. They were available in the supermarket.

reply

Of course there was gourmet coffee in 1994! All of the above replies are over thinking it. Maybe it wasnt what is called "gourmet" today . Maybe theres even a brand with a gourmet range now , which just muddies the question.

Some coffee is better than other coffee, even in 1994. It dosent have to be according-to-hoyle gourmet , it might just be top of the range instant. That alone is enough for Jules to use the word gourmet, as a similie.

That said I'm sure all the posh brands of fresh ground in all kinds of blends were also available in 94.

reply

They had just introduced gourmet coffees ... I cannot think of the brands,
but they were not really gourmet, they were like Nestle's Quick, flavored
coffees with lots of sugar and artificial flavors.

I wish I could remember things ... it was when they Cafe-au-lait phrase
entered American consciousness. It was a phase that passed.

reply

I remember those. They came in small, striped, rectangular tin cans? Something-or-other international? But I'm certain that is not what Jimmie is serving. When those were new, they were popular among non-coffee drinkers, but regarded as something of a joke among people who drank actual coffee.

When I initially saw the film in 1994, I assumed Jimmie brewed coffee similarly to the way I brewed mine then, which is how I still brew it now. Buy whole beans, grind them while I'm boiling water, and brew the coffee in my trusty old Chemex glass urn. Or, he may have used a French press. They were becoming trendy at the time, and the Chemex was regarded as something old-fashioned.

In any event, anyone who thinks there were no options for making great coffee at home in 1994 is misinformed.

> anyone who thinks there were no options for making great coffee at home

Or at least sugary coffee. ;-)

Yes, I think they were called "International Coffees" ... and they may have been from Maxwell House, because I think the Nestle's association must have come from rectangular box with the round pry-able lid that looked like the powdered chocolate milk container Nestle's Quick used to come in. As I kid I lived on that stuff - chocolate milk, not coffee.

This one is in the 80's, but it is also made with Nutra-Sweet.

I think the brand line came out earlier.
