Why would people in the outback be so intolerant?

Everyone who grew up in Australia knows and loves Dame Edna. Why would people in the outback be so intolerant?

Are you asking this seriously?

Barry Humphreys is a married man with children. And he's a comedian. He doesn't dress as a female because he is gay, transvestite or transgender. So what Barry Humphries does is make fun of women like Dame Edna. He also makes fun of people like Sir Les Patterson. THis sort of humour is acceptable. Being different isn't.

A lot people are still like that in the outback. If your an Aussie ABC did an amazing documentary on the gay communities in the time this was made just the other day. Track down 'Between a Frock and a Hard Place'

Small communities are notoriously intolerant of anyone different, no matter where they are.

Sadly this remains true in big cities too, but there are enough people around to be able to find like minded souls that you can link up with. That's a lot of what the film says.

Also small minded people are prone to follow the opinion of the masses, so I am sure that there would have been plenty of critics of Dame Edna when Barry Humphries first created the character, but once it was well established much less so.
